Web Mail Vs ISP Mail

Reading on the general info on this site it mentions about not getting tied to ISP mail address etc, this to me seems like a fine idea but as a very security oriantated person I have this niggling worry that Webmail is not as safe as ISP Mail or in a sense you have no real protection with Free Webmail.
At present I use Yahoo for all Forum Sign Ups / General Newsletters and similar things that I would not class as a security risk if someone hacked it.
On the other side I use my ISP email for the likes of ebay / paypal / banking etc.
What are other peoples views on this, is their just as much security with Web Mail ?

But many ISPs provide webmail anyway.
You have no "real protection with Free Webmail" against what?
I don't see that there's a difference. In both cases your e-mail can be retrieved on any internet connected PC anywhere in the world.0 -
I prefer the option of getting your own domain name (£5 to register) and setting up your pop3 (same as ISP) email with that. Then if you move ISP your email addresses stay the same. Most hosts also offer webmail as standard so you get the best of both worlds.0

This sound very interesting any chance you could tell me how I would go about this please.
Many thanks

You really do not need to be worried about security from an email account from any reputable company.
If you have kept your ebay/paypal/bank emails they will have your account name etc. It is just a matter of then getting a new password sent to that email account they are reading  How secure is that answer you gave to the question that only you know
Maybe, in your emails, you already have that email, that sent you your new password. Maybe you have a few emails showing that "secure" password you always use
Once in the account - it will be time to change the password and lock the legit owner out. Start sending spam, open new accounts, send out viruses, write that email to your boss/spouse telling them  change the del address of merchant accounts etc...Rich people save then spend.
Poor people spend then save what's left.0 -

First thing to do is think of a catchy domain name then register it. Most of the single word domain names are long gone but you can still get good addresses.
For registering I use either:
https://www.123reg.co.uk
https://www.1and1.co.uk
https://www.godaddy.com
The first two I use for .co.uk addresses depending on who is the cheapest and the last one if I need a .com. I used https://www.1and1.co.uk most recently as they were £4.98 for a two year registration. It's a straightforward process, like using a shopping cart on any other site really.
All these companies also offer hosting so you can set up your website and email. I don't use any of them for that though as a friend hosts my websites. Click below to see some prices:
123reg
1&1
GoDaddy
1&1 appear to be the cheapest of the two UK ones for webspace and email as they have no setup fee. Godaddy offer higher spec but many people in the UK prefer their sites to be hosted in the UK, although it wouldn't bother me either way.
It's very handy doing it this way as you are not tied to an ISP email address.
Hope that helps. If you need any other pointers let me/us know.0 -
I use 1&1 aswell. One of the most important things to do is to keep your contact details up to date with them. 1&1 do automatically renew your domain, but if there's a problem, with your credit card for example, and they can't get in touch, the first time you would find this out is when it has expired.
The price for .uk addresses is £1.99 per year excluding VAT. These are registered for 2 years. The advantage of .uk's is that you don't have to have your address shown on the whois (that is a way of looking up who the address is registered to) if you are a non-trading individual. You can choose from .co.uk, .org.uk and .me.uk0 -
Have only ever used web based e-mail.....hotmail, postmaster, etc.(ideal for storing stuff of the comp) Never have used Outlook Express, wouldn't know how to set it up. As far as I can see it's just another junction box to go wrong.I pop all mail from the ISP to one of the others.0

I have different e-mail addresses for different purposes, for buying online, signing up for newsletters, etc.. to minimise spam.
I find web mail more convenient as you can login from anywhere.. however, with some free web mail services (e.g. hotmail), some websites/forums don't allow you to sign up for accounts using them.
BTW, you can use Yahoo! Mail to check your POP3 e-mails.你是废纸!!!1110 -
Same here Fossil...one for family , Yahoo for freecycle, another for signing up, all lined up on the Desktop, but am going more for Inboxes on the site as here, and the Beeb messageboards.0

I have found gmail to be a great webmail and pop3 provider.0
