My elec dd is £38 a month and we are in credit to the tune of £100. By the spring I expect to still be in credit by £50.
I run my TD and DW twice a day (both on e7), my washer uses very little elec cos it doesn't have a water heating element my hob and oven are lezzy too.
During the day I have the pc and two radios on all the time and come dusk I draw drapes and put lamps on in every room upstairs and down. I know that is extravagent but our house is semi open plan, with lots of internal glass and plate glass windows so it feels cold and horrid if there a large dark spaces plus it stops the kidz turning on more power guzzling lights as they charge about the place. We live in a rural area with poor street lighting so we have a fair few outside lights at the front and back which are left on as well. So I don't think our bill is bad.Life's a beach! We had to have an extension built to make a kitchen when we bought it, which has two outside walls and a flat roof and its the coldest room in the house except when Im cooking. All the rooms that have 2 outside walls are noticeably cooler than the other rooms. I was wondering if todays modern built houses are more energy efficient because of the way they were built?
We have a 3 bed 1930's semi with no cavity wall insulation. The house is all electric. We have storage heaters in all rooms except the kitchen, which has no heating, and the bathroom which has a small fan heater. Our monthly bill comes in at about £40 per month.0 -
We have a 100 year old detached 3 bed. All electric (storage heaters etc) on economy 7. Our bill is £61 pm DD. I don't think that this is bad as this is all our energy ie no gas.The best bargains are priceless!!!!!!!!!! :T :T :T0

For anyone who's got an Aldi nearby them they'll be selling Energy Saving lightbulbs from the 9th of Feb as a special at 99p each.
To quote their weekly specials email :The longer-lasting, more cost-efficient alternative to conventional bulbs. Approx: 6,000 hours available in 11W and 21W, equivalent to 60W and 100W standard bulbs.Creeping back in for accountability after falling off the wagon in 2016.Need to get back to old style in modern ways, watching the pennies and getting stuff done!0 -
Hi
If you are on certain benefits or disabled, your local council should provide free energy saving lightbulbs. Just call them and they will tell you where to pick up from-they posted mine as I couldnt get to the offices.
Also, some of the fuel suppliers give away free ones. We were with Powergen and they sent us 6, and our local council sent me 8:eek: so have a few in the cupboard. I am sure that other companies do this also.

Penny pincher - you've just reminded me my dad has a box of these from the same scheme in his pantry. I should put them in for him really as its not like he can reach as he's in a wheelchair. Their bills are absolutely huge, cos my mum feels the cold terribly, and has the thermostat set ridiculously high - sometimes i've caught her with it at 30, which is a joke. Their house is terribly energy inefficient. When it snows, it all melts straight away from their roof.
If you are on certain benefits, can't you get a subsidy from council/providers for cavity wall insulation and loft insulation as well?
Speaking of insulation for the loft - we did ours before christmas because it was half price in B and Q, and we had vouchers, so we managed to get it done really cheaply, and since then i've noticed a big improvement in the temperature of the house and have dropped the thermostat temp by 3 or 4 degrees.0 -

just out of interest what should the thermostat be on? I have mine on about 25 and when I'm feeling cold I will turn it up to 30? I live in a modern house(5yrs old) and I'm not a particularly cold person but think this house requires it?0 -
You can certainly get grants for all types of home insulation. The amount you can get depends on individual circumstances but some people can have it done free of charge.
I'd check your energy suppliers web site first. They'll have an energy efficiency page that should give you the details you're looking for.
A 'normal' living temperature is supposed to be 21 but I have to say, I feel chilly at that & have mine a bit higher.0 -
I've seen a link to a dot gov page somewhere that recommended about 19°C.
Now that I have double glazing mine is down at 17°C and I'm quite comfortable with a t!shirt and a top.
I couldn't find the link I was looking for, but this one might be of help:!
