Try the I wanna board, the shopping experts there might be able to help; if not In My Home might cover this too.

Thanks for this thread. It made me go around the house and check how many things we do have left on standby. Answer was far too many.
I am really pleased that I did this as I found 2 things on standby in daughters room and she is away at uni. So these went off straight away.
I already only use TD in an emergency and have mainly energy saving bulbs so cannot make any more savings there. We also now turn off our computer at the plug each night which should help and as already mentioned although it is on during the day I always turn the screen off when not in use.
But every little helps.
Keep up the good work everyone.0 -
OH has justed called my - Scottish Power say that my meter is correct
I will have to read the letter myself later when I get home - it has some consumption charts on it
Does anyone know how many units per night that a storage heater should use .
Thanks

Im quite shocked to how much electric people pay.My last quarterly bill was £53.09 with npower.I wouldnt say im careful with my electric either, not like i am with my gas.I use tumble dryer for every load(between 7 and 10 per week) as i have huge condensation problems so it isnt an option. My washing machine is ancient so i wouldnt think it would be very energy efficient.PC is on most of the time even when im not on it.
units used last quarter, bill dated 12th dec = 500 units with npower.I pay less per quarter than others do monthly,my heating and cooking is by gas.0 -
We have a semi 1930's house which hasnt got cavity wall insulation and I don't think its particularly energy efficient. We had to have an extension built to make a kitchen when we bought it, which has two outside walls and a flat roof and its the coldest room in the house except when Im cooking. All the rooms that have 2 outside walls are noticeably cooler than the other rooms. I was wondering if todays modern built houses are more energy efficient because of the way they were built?0

there is spin -off from not using stand -by on electrical items and that is safety
It is much safer to switch things off properly
beachbeth yes modern houses are very much more energy efficient. We asked the SAP rating before we bought and for this house it was 106. It must have been about 60 for our last house. New houses generally had sap ratings of about 85 to 95. The boiler and postion relative to other houses all count. This one has a condensing boiler and is mid-terrace town house

We are with scottish power for gas and electricity and the bill I received yesterday for last quarter is £215 for gas and £115 for electricity plus VAT. And I only use tumble dryer a couple of times per year. I do know this house is not energy efficient, detached and exposed to winds on three sides.
Our bill shows 1645 units of electricity used and 997 units of gas used. Scottish Power now want to increase our DD for gas and elec to £100 per month. Does anyone else pay this much?
I am hoping for a small decrease now that I am actively turning off all items left on standby.0 -
Joe we used to pay £98 per month for our last house and that was before all the price increases
We did put in extra loft insulation, double glazing and cavity wall insulation so I think there is an inate enrgy seepage in older houses0 -
If it helps anyone - every kilowat uses one unit of electricity in an hour. For example, I have an 81/2 kilowat electric shower so if I had it on for an hour I'd use 81/2 units. The pence per unit is on your bill.
The calculation is correct regardless of the type of appliance so it will work for your storage heaters Smokey.0 -
My all round money saving tip for those who can, spend as much time as you can with nearby relatives or friends.
