    What error message is it?

Have you tried the website of the scanner manufacturer to see if software/drivers are available for XP?
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die

    Thanks for the replys

The reason i need Windows 95 is for my other pc. The pc is not on the internet it's just for work. I have a A0 scanner for scanning in archtectural drawings but the software for the scanner will only run in 95 or 98 or so i've been told. Every time i try to install the software on the pc with Xp on it i just get error message.
why not ask on the local freecycle for an old pc .explain why chances are some one will have an old p1 or some thing , that will reun 95 better then the xp machine will.

Try, right click on the.exe file in your software, then select the compatibility tab, select win98.

    Move along, nothing to see.
  • Hi,

The error reads as follows and is in a grey box with a red circle with a cross in it. At the top in the blue title bar it say CISW.exe - Application error then underneath it says. The application failed to initialize proerly (0xc0000005). Click on OK to terminate application.

The scanner is 2 old so the company no longer offer support for it.

This is an old problem that I used to have when I worked in PC build at a company supplying the CAD industry, the kit they use can be very expensive like A0 scanners and A0 laser printers cost many thousands so they were held on to for a while pretty much untill they died and couldnt be repaired. The manufacturers were very slow at releasesing updated drivers for new operating systems. most printers were an easy fix it was just a case of finding a driver that would work and playing with the page sizes etc. but scanners were a different thing all together

It it will work on windows 98 then you would be much better off getting a copy of second edition as that was solid and as it iwill be offline and only used occasionally should be fine you will also get the use of the usb ports. I will see if I have any old unused 95 or 98 packs left I may have thrown them out a year ago in the new year clear out. or may have kept them with the intent of ebay.

An additional note for you if your existing windows XP is profesional or vista is pro or business you can actually take advantage of wat is called downgrade rights, Microsoft accept that there are users who have software and hardware that isnt compatible with their newer operating systems so they allow people to install older operating systems (and office) under the licence of the newer one so you don't need to buy a 95 or 98 licence if your pc has an XP pro licence on it. XP home licences do not have downgrade rights.
so you just need a cd to install with and a cd key to use it could be any.

So that should save you some money.

Can you run a Windows 98 Operating system as a virtual machine and still access the scanner drivers ? I do not know.
    J_B.
  • I think virtual and "external" drivers don't mix.
  • Hi,

My dad still has his windows 95 machine sat in his office (it booted up last time he used it)

Depending on where you live we may be able to come to some kind of arrangement.

    Anywhere near the Midlands?

maybe, if the OP wants to install the free VMware server program.

it allows you to attach USB, Serial & Parallel devices to the virtual machine once you have installed the approprate controller in the VM settings
