Broken Engagement

My husband's nephew has just been dumped by his fiancee of just over a year. He spent over £1k on the engagement ring and she won't return it to him.
Please can someone advise how he can go about getting the ring back - can he make a claim through the small claims court and if so, is it easy enough to do on his own. He lives in England.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Whilst courtesy and tradition dictates the ring ought to be returned then I don't think legally it has to I'm afraid...DFW Nerd #025DFW no more! Officially debt free 2017 - now joining the MFW's!

Why would she be expected to return the ring?
(seriously, I didnt know you had to)0 -
no legal obligation at all - it was a gift from him to her.

The ring is a contract to marriage... If marraige doesn't occur then she should actually return the ring...
I saw a case on judge Judy once... But not sure if it would work in the UK courts system...A very proud Mummy to 3 beautiful girls... I do pity my husband though, he's the one to suffer the hormones...My Fathers Daughter wrote: »Krystal is so smart and funny and wonderful I am struck dumb in awe in her presence.

threaten to stick some naughty photos of her up on the internet?0 -
I agree, sorry! It was a gift from him to her.
She should of course return it morally, if she is not the type of person that would then he should probably be glad the relationship is over IMO!
If it is any help, the ring (2nd hand) would be worth nowhere near that now. Rings plumet in value as soon as they are purchased.0 -
that's in the US, not the same in the UK

In the eyes of the law i am afraid it is seen as a gift so he has little chance of getting it back:heartpulsOnce a Flylady, always a Flylady:heartpuls0
