Recession? You wouldn't think so!

Still can't afford a house, might as well spend the money boozing.
Liverpool was the same the other weekend, packed.
Lastnight Pizza Hut was rammed but that is probably the 50% off vouchers and the VUE being Orange Wednesday, car park was full to the brim in Leeds.
Still able to put it on the credit card and there is always my work colleagues favourite lines "house prices will recover and start going up in the 2nd part of the year anyway"I beep for Robins - Beep Beep
& Choo Choo for trains!!0 -
I went out last weekend for the first time since my baby was born, and we went to York, Bradford, Halifax and Leeds.
Every single bar/club I went to was packed to the rafters with drinkers, especially the Lloyds/Wetherspoons type bars.
Looks like people still enjoy a good time despite the recession, in fact I imagine that the recession is increasing the amount of people going out to have a good time, just to escape the gloomy economy and news in the real world.
Has anyone else noticed this?
I've highlighted the important bit. People are still drinking on Friday / Saturday nights. For some pubs weekend trade is probably the only thing keeping them from boing bust. It's only the student pubs or bargain boozers that see a half decent trade on a week day.
In my local there might only be a couple of people in on a weekday evening (on the rare occassion I go in on a weekday), a year or two ago there'd be a lot more people. On the weekends it's pretty much as busy as it has ever been, but the traffic does come in later I've noticed, previously it'd be jam packed by 8pm, now it's more like 9pm.
I know a taxi driver and according to him (ok it's one driver in one town) the weekends are still OK but weekdays have been dead for a while now (even Christmas office party season was dead)."One thing that is different, and has changed here, is the self-absorption, not just greed. Everybody is in a hurry now and there is a 'the rules don't apply to me' sort of thing." - Bill Bryson0 -
Interesting that you say it is more like 9pm, we were out from 11am until 4am the next day, and everywhere was packed the whole time...0

Well, I went to the town last Sunday and it was as busy as any other January...
To be fair, until last night when I found out that my dad has lost his job, I thought that the news are exaggerated.. I still think they are, but now I can actually see people loosing jobs. (well, one)0 -
Too true the curry/steak club weeknights are a bargain.
i don't think wetherspoons is much of a bargain - you get exactly what you pay for, which is bad location, bad premises, bad food, bad staff, bad fellow clientelle and bad beer.
i'd rather pay £5 a pint in my local than go in there.0 -

I have always found the opposite... Good location, good buildings, good food, friendly staff, excellent choice of drinks... the clientelle can vary :P0 -

Bank holiday 3 day recessions were always a laugh.
Is it MSE to buy cheap beer and drink more of it?
I've still got booze left over from Tesco's Christmas deal (3 boxes of 18, choice of Stella/ Carlsberg/ Becks for £20).
I filled my boots or in this case, my car boot.--
Every pound less borrowed (to buy a house) is more than two pounds less to repay and more than three pounds less to earn, over the course of a typical mortgage.0 -

Unfortunatly I am now a hermit (19 month old son) and now drink like one of those responsible types the goverment go on about (unfortunatly)
But was it the smoking ban or the birth of my son that caused the closing of so many pubs. We may never know.;)0
