On the sugar debate, as manufacturers don't have to declare whether they user animal or wood charcoal, I tend to stick to either unbleached organic fairtrade cane sugar, or beet sugar (but only if I have to, as its one of the few products where I feel that we should import rather than grow it ourselves). Then again, you could argue that the use of bone char at least means that nothing is wasted from the carnivorous food chain...
I guess we could start emailing the manufacturers asking them for details of what's used in their processes... it might make them aware of people's concerns.
Charcoal is made by burning wood without oxygen, so can be produced relatively quickly.0 -

What does everyone think of the cane sugar debate? Is it vegan?
I think all sugar in this country is vegan. I buy Whitworths and it says on the packet 'suitable for vegetarians'.
Organic veggies is a bit of a sticky problem as they do use bonemeal, blood etc. I'm hoping to get an allotment soon and I will be growing vegan organic.0 -
I was at the IFE at ExCeL yesterday. Amongst the info I picked up was a leaflet from the Vegan Society's stall giving a link to Shazzie's free raw food e-book, Raw Britannia:
http://www.shazzie.com/divinity/raw_britannia/
It's a nice little thing - it gives recipes for a three course meal plus cocktails - & I'm sure could be adapted for cheaper & seasonal ingredients as necessary.0 -
Isn't raw vegan going a little far? Don't Raw vegans only eat food that has been taken to below 40 degrees C?
A step further are vegans who only eat food that has been naturally shed by plants so as not to harm the environment any further. :SHi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -

No, it's a perfectly healthy way to live, I never heard the 40 degrees thing
They're fruitarians. The stupid things you do, you regret... if you have any sense, and if you don't regret them, maybe you're stupid. - Katharine Hepburn0 -

I personally think that you saying isn’t that too far is rather ill-informed of you as there are many benefits from raw foods. The fact that it is nearer to the state that nature intended us to eat it is one of the benefits. If you read more about it you can see that it can benefit you a lot. I would love to be a raw vegan and one day may be or hopefully very close (most likely I’ll 80% raw 20% cooked and not 100% though). I’m increasing my raw foods again to try this. Also it does benefit the environment as the energy used to cook food is saved and that in turn keeps your energy bills down benefiting you financially. However you will more likely be spending more money and/or time in the garden growing food for more fruit, vegetables, sprouting pulses etc. It depends how near to nature, the natural way etc you plan to become.
A fruitarian will only eat that that does not kill the plant. Root vegetables are not eaten as they are ripped from the ground and killed to harvest. That is why fruit, nuts and seeds are the staple of the diet. Botanical fruitarians will also include pulses and green leafy vegetables into their diet also. I can see the reasoning in not wanting to kill the plant as it is living also but until they prove that they have a nervous system like all animals I will continue to eat plants as I have done.I am a vegan woman. My OH is a lovely omni guy0 -
If you're going raw, make sure you still eat cooked tomatoes, as lycopene is actually more easily absorbed from cooked tomatoes (hence the reason for ketchup counting as one of your 5 a day!).
Sadly, although I love raw vegetables, I can't eat them as they're too difficult for me to digest... and however much I love raw cauliflower, the pain is never worth it!0 -

Aaahh I see what the other poster means now, I mis-read their post at that point
Have you seen this raw brownie recipe? It's delicious  I improvised it a bit more, left out the coco powder, rolled the mix into balls then rolled them in coconut http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg64/Sleepymy/coconut.jpg?t=1237246371 Sooo good *dribbles*
I'd like to try to slowly introduce more raw foods, but only very simple recipes that take little energy to make. The stupid things you do, you regret... if you have any sense, and if you don't regret them, maybe you're stupid. - Katharine Hepburn0
