Incidentally, soya mince and LM vege sausages are the only fake meat products I've had. I don't yet know if I'll subscribe to the 'I don't agree with eating animals, so why would I eat something that tastes or looks like it' point of view - perhaps to take it to it's logical conclusion we'd never use any substitutes if were were concerned about using something which represented what we're against (if that makes sense), so perhaps fake meats can't be knocked. Hmmmm

LM sausages - bleeuugghhh!!! Redwoods do some nice ones.

Years ago someone asked me why I would eat vege sausages and burgers as they are designed to look like meat. My reply was that they look nothing like meat - meat is put into those shapes to disguise the fact that they are animals, and so that meat-eaters can remove themselves mentally from the fact that they are eating a dead pig or cow or whatever. Before I went vegetarian I would look at the meat on my plate and get a mental image of a whole animal lying there! Just after I went veggie I had a very vivid dream which I've never forgotten. I was walking past an abattoir and instead of animals lining up to be killed it was people!

Bourbons! Of course, forgot to mention those (and they're 100 times more exciting than rich teas, which are useless dunked in coffee). Mmmmm, chocolate spread. Think that will go well with vegan pancakes to make authentic Parisian crepes? I feel an excuse for making food coming on ;)

Not just bourbons - Tesco Value digestives are also vegan. I made my own 'penguin' biscuits once using bourbons. I melted dark chocolate and dipped the boubons in! A bit messy! The Vegan Society have a really nice pancake recipe which I use all the time.
  • suep, i have found hot cross buns never seem to display a vegetarian symbol, therefore i have avoided them. if they really aren't vegetarian then they must contain something more than just egg, gelatine is the usual suspect (made from boiling dead animal bones) but i would have to check the ingredients list. that was my problem- the HC buns never had an ingredients list as they are in basic bakery packaging.

Thats what threw me, the only thing on the packet is 'may contain traces of nuts and seeds' Im going to have a go at the recipe kim-ley linked to.

I have been a vegetarian for a few years so Im not finding it too big an adjustment, a lot of my food was vegan already, its just my meat eating family aren't being very supportive so I'm finding this thread a real help.

suep i have the same problem my o/h doesn't eat meat but only because he doesn't like it not and he wishes he did?!?! When I announced I was going to be veggie then vegan - and so were my kids the response I got from him his family and my family was not a good one!!!! I have got him around to the idea that they will definitely be veggie (even though I know they will definitely be vegan until they are old enough to decide for themselves). He thinks that it should be their choice but I cant get him to see that it can be their choice to eat meat etc and not their choice not to!!! He seems to think that they will miss out on something and he also thinks that they wont fit in the same at school because of it? As for the in-laws I regularly have them over for dinner but haven't for a while when I announced that if they come to my house I will only be cooking vegan food they were not happy. I don't think they will come again?!? but if it was a religious reason why I couldn't cook meat and the like I have the feeling that for some reason it would be more acceptable to them :(
