hi all
Toto - love the photo, such a cutey
Pania - that's a horrible situation so son into a new job. Rant away and we'll help you.
I'm having deep and meaningful thoughts and calculations in my head re: salaries and jobs today. A job in another department looking after their section of the intranet and public website pages has come up - piece of pish for me as it used to be 50% of my old job with Cruella and was also looking after the sites for a whole organisation!
The starting salary is £17,500, which is £1080 after tax/ni/pension. This would cover bills (my basic bills are £1000 a month), petrol (about £30 a month) and the tax I have to pay for AQA (around £50 per month).
I'd still have to find £200 a month after tax to be able to pay for food, have money for MOT/car tax etc as well as a bit for haircuts every 4 months etc. It would still mean working full time AND teach and /or AQA! I could possibly get by with £150 a month after tax but it would still keep me in a very 'tight' position with no kind of social life and still working every weekend on top of a 37 hour office job.
So, I sat and used listentotaxman.com to work out monthly incomes for various salaries and realistically, to cover bills, food, petrol, car stuff, have money for presents throughout the year bought the MSE way, hair cuts, 1 night out a month (heaven forbid I might ever be able to afford more!) etc (basically a VERY basic SOA), I need to be on 22k before I can see teaching/invigilating/AQA as 'extra' money - ie money to start trying to build my savings back up.
I don't know if my current department, with my current experience is going to offer me that kind of salary this year, even with any merger opportunities.....I really need to think hard..............
ignore my ramblings...........

so would you get tax credits? have you included them?
£1000 a month for bills seems high, are you maybe over estimating that? Not prying but seems a lot with the frugal lifestyle you lead (that's a compliment by the way!)
Any way to negotiate a higher starting salary band in leui of obvious experience/service with local authority?I'm just a seething mass of contradictions....(it's part of my charm!)0 -
Sounds like an interesting site BB! I think from what you've said about the experience you've got that you should be able to get something paying at least £22k but as you say, it may mean moving from where you are at the moment.
I was looking at a few ads for similar jobs to mine earlier and other places are paying £2-3k more even as a starting salary - what am I doing here?!!

Interesting site BB. I must try to remember that one0

Not on the new salary - I get £99 WTC at the moment, but that would well and truly disappear (I think the maximum for a single salary/no kids etc is around £13k)(Land_of)_Maz wrote: »so would you get tax credits? have you included them?(Land_of)_Maz wrote:£1000 a month for bills seems high, are you maybe over estimating that? The joys of a mortgage in Poole  My mortgage is £770 a month (around 120k balance), fixed at 5.44% until June 2010 - managed to get it fixed just as I left my old job, it was a good deal at the time!
CT is £90 (inc 25% discount), water is £46 (meter isn't any cheaper, I've checked a couple of times), gas/electric is £35, then there is car/house insurance, phone/broadband etc, perhaps it's £980 a month, but as close to £1000 rounding it up and everything is on the cheapest deal/change every year/go through quidco etc. I also have a bit from quidco each month I haven't factored in, but that's not guaranteed and it really is seat of the pants stuff if quidco is seen as income rather than 'treat' money if I've got a full time job.(Land_of)_Maz wrote:Any way to negotiate a higher starting salary band in leui of obvious experience/service with local authority?
probably not, the rule is generally start at the bottom. The top of the band for the intranet job is 20k which is a good salary for the post itself but even if there was a bit of negotiation, it wouldn't be much higher than tha 17.5k start.
I need to decide whether I'm content with my next job being a stepping stone (ie something around 17.5k) and keep on with the other 2 jobs, or widen my net and look for something that gives me the security of knowing everything is covered.
I just feel I did my 'time' paying off my debt and I shouldn't still be struggling just as much as I was on 28k with 20k of debt!
But, as my OH is quick to point out to me, it was my choice to move away from working in PR, so it's for me to think it all through and make the best decision.

BB, dont get overshadowed by the figures. We all now that money is important, having learned that in our own ways, but dont sell yourself to the highest bidder..........make sure you are doing something that you are happy to do.
I've been in fantastic jobs, big salary, cars, expenses etc.......but hated it and got into debt ( NOT an excuse ), thats why I'm driving trucks....enough money and happy to do it.
And Pania, the same for you xx

....one-way ticket to Portugal booked !0 -
not possible pooky - I have a 2 bed bungalow, and my second bedroom is used as my office for working on AQA, guest room when family come and it's only small as it is.
The bungalow is small as it is, 1 reception room and it's hard enough to have quality time with OH as it is without anyone else being here!

this is it pepe - I think back to when I was earning 30k 10 years ago in a job that was mega pressure and my ex was on around £23-£24k and we were STILL in debt! How mad was that?!!
Guess it's just a lot for a single salary, but that's the way it is.
