They charge up to £4 for a cup of coffee and only make £19,000 per annum profit?

I'm not doubting what you heard, but how is that possible?

Because they pay really high shop rents....and then everyone elses go up too....then any Indy coffe shops close and they have Tescopolied the area.....and the death throes for other indy retailers nearby take a few years to feed through.

Conrad did say that it was an average price, so it's possible that there are quite a few shops that make a substantial loss which brings the average down. Perhaps these are the shops that are shutting?
or from the cluster theory that was posted earlier.

Or yes, indeed, from clustering instead.

I am only feeling stressy because I have spent 2 hours on a bankruptcy, fact finding mission elsewhere and it's not much fun......

............esp if you have to go down because you can't pay your new high shop rent (due to evidence from another chain that opened up on my St of Gold) and you have another venture that you are *choke* TURNING DOWN ££££££ because you haven't got enough quality hours in the day to do the work and your surplus profit that COULD fund it is being swallowed up in a now, loss making shop.

So, as our LL will take us down for 10 X £42k plus 1 yrs business rates of £16k = £436k as it's the only way to exit the premises, I feel a bit peeeed off. We have nearly 10 years left on the lease....but they will add charges etc too.

Can you imagine going bust for £436k and you never, ever even bought a nice new pair of shoes....let alone all the other stuff that BR's are meant to have spent there money on.
I've had about 8 days off in 3 years and I am tired

That's pretty sh!itty; I'm genuinely really sorry to hear this. Like cleaver, I always am interested in your posts when I see them. I don't think you're being stressy but, in fact, you're handling this remarkably well. Better than I could, at any rate.

I still personally find the comedy sketches a welcome addition to the forum. For someone as fortunate as I it helps break up what are serious, and sometimes quite depressing, topics.

Saying this can't sound anything but trite, but I really hope it works out as well as it can do for you. I really do!
  • By the way...the irony of me thinking "why was everyone on the forum at 10-12 on a _Friday_ night" at 2am on a Saturday morning hasn't escaped me!

I havnet had a day off ( aopart from today) in 2 weeks nad boy does my body know about it.

I was talking to my parents who ran greengrocery shops in my childhood about it this week. Dad used to get up at 3 to go to the market mum up at 6. Never used to get to bed tll 12, we lived above the shop. childcare done by fantastic relatives.

I was bemoaning how we never have time to phone family/ hoover the stairs/ go to launderette/ she siad it was like that for 4 years while they ran the shops. they needed time, but if they had that time they needed sleep not to hoover the stairs.

I feel for you, I dont know what the answer is. On one hand we should all be grateful a small business is doing well. but this small business holder seems to be working much harder than most of us without the legal amount of holidays to pay overinflated rents.

This country has got a lot to answer for.

Tip- be nice to your local shopkeepers and traders, many going through a very hard time.
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast

Nice sentiment, but the truth is that shopping is not a form of Saturday morning entertainment for me. If i want a product, i reseach on line for quality and price and buy what i want. They deliever stuff to my door! I use the convenience of supermarkets because i can park without charges and no quibble returns policies if i change my mind on a product.

The high street is dying on its feet. The proliferation of signboards outside 50% of shops alone is visual proof of the desperate times.
    Reasons include-
High shop rents, high rates, competition from out of town complexes and supermarkets, credit squeeze from banks on consumers and businesses, car parking fees, massive growth of E-commerce.

A glimmer of hope is that estate agents & bank mergers are going to provide plenty of new empty units in every town over the next few years, perhaps the oversupply of units will force rent and rates down. Survival of shops will depend on appealing to women who really enjoy the shopping experience at the weekend and are willing to pay up.

Shopping isnt entertainment for me either! Im so over buying things I dont need, and have been ever since I found this site ;)

BUT somethings ultimately you DO need. I dont have a car and use many local shops in walking distance for the fags/ pint of milk/ newspaper/bag of sweets.

Many moneysavers know that the supermarket is very expensive for many things ( fresh produce in particular) and altohugh I buy SOME items there, I intersperse it with buying from small businesses - some online some high st.

if you solely buy from supermarkets rest assured- as we have sen the cartels that go on- you are more than likely always paying more.

Subway will be a bit dodgy for the same reason.

Subway are expanding over here {NI} - big local news, loads of new shops and jobs.

I believe it's one of those BAD things in life that could end up turning into A Very Good Thing in the end.
We just have to work our way through the bad thing first. Fortunately, I have taken some professional advice and we will be doing what needs to be done to suit us longterm.

And I feel really bad for upsetting the comedy boys..I didn't mean to...sorry.:o
