I was amazed at the prices of cucumbers - so wil not be buyng any. As for the Tomatoes - either wait for special offers and buy a load or just but real tomatoes and cut them up. I bought a large punnet in sainsbury last week for 99p and it's equivalent to about 3 tins.
  • Napolni tinned toms are now 98p in Asda, it's ridiculous how much things are going up lately.

    Yes, but on BOGOF

Just been to Sainsburys and went to buy a cucumber and imagine the shock ! The price is now, wait for it ..................... £1.20 !!!!! I was with a friend at the time and we were shocked.

Then went to buy some tin tomatoes and they were 33p now they are 38p. I was useless at the prices of food but now even I have noticed how much it goes up daily.

I'm a greengrocer and can tell you that yes, cucumbers cost me about £1 each wholesale. I paid £14.50 just this morning for a box of 14. They are usually dutch or spanish and if you put it this way, all it takes is for a country like spain or holland to have a sharp frost or cold snap to wipe out a whole crop, weakening supply against an already strong demand thus a price increase.

    Its not rocket science.

thats what i say but didnt get me anywhere,
  • I read the title and thought. i didnt know they do tinned cucumbers, lol

A big thanks to all the comp posters for their effort

Because all you are doing is trolling.
We are well aware of seasonal fluctuations but the prices are exceptionally high, and as this site is about money saving we are discussing it. Your comments add nothing to the discussion, like saying shock horror prices go up when out of season.

The "money saving" aspect is in the advice to buy seasonal vegetables.

If you fear they will not reduce down in price by the summer, the "money saving" advice would be to learn now how to grow your own during the summer.

By using those two pieces of "money saving" advice, you won't need to get "wind up".

Off-topic... we have snails too and cucumber is about the only thing they appear to eat (despite trying to give them a varied diet). Any suggestions? I think we had some success with dandelion leaves during the summer but nothing else seems to interest them.

Ours love iceberg lettuce as well as cucumber. Tried them with melon, banana and apple but melon was about the only fruit they would nibble on. The pair of them devour the lettuce though.
