Motability and grant for car help please

  • Of course, there's also the huge issue of the emotional and mental impact on the disabled child, the parents and the other siblings of being transported to everything separately! What an absurd idea it is! Then there's the unnecessary environmental impact of driving two cars around when only one is needed and also the sheer cost of fuelling two cars.

  • Please remember, not all of the motor manufactures contribute all of their vehicles to the Government Motability scheme. They provide their own equivalent Manufacturers Motability schemes which, as some advantages over the Government scheme.
The Government scheme has distinct disadvantages for the user, in comparison with the Manufacturers schemes...like, compare identical Ford scheme with Govt Motability.Deposits, payment, period of contract, End of contract ownership etc..

Consult your local sales-service dealer...and make notes.

If you're lucky enough to be able bodied and have able bodied children so that you can use public transport and don't need a car then that's great. Once you are disabled or have had a disabled child then you need the car therefore why does it matter if you choose to have more kids - you'd need the car whether you had them or not.
What a load of tosh it doesn't matter unless you CHOOSE to have a larger family when you already have a suitable car. As a disabled household I wouldn't choose to have more children as there is enough pressure but if I did I wouldn't expect someone else to pay.
Oh and another thing ADULTS CAN HAVE DISABILITIES TOO.

Surely the whole point is that disabled people shouldn't be forced to compromise their lives further than is required by their disability. And as disabilities often limit the earning power (I used to be on £50K and now can't work) it isn't unfair to compensate for that. I won't be having any more children, even though I would very much like to, simply because my disability (which qualifies me for higher rate mobility DLA!) means I wouldn't be able to care for them. But if I did I would need a car big enough for all of us.

A vested interest?? How dare you?? Do you have a disabled child? Or any child? Are you currently paying into the UK tax system? No. You have no experience of the issue, how dare you imply parents benefit from these difficult circumstances??

You came over to the UK , benefitted from all the advantages, then scuttled back to Eastern Europe after gaining all the advantages , and think you are an expert on life in the Uk.

No, you are not. Take your ignorant , albeit grammatically correct opinions elsewhere.

I am a mum of four, one of whom is disabled. I work up to 80 hours a week, from home, so I can provide care for my child when she is unwell and off school. My husband works full time. My daughter is the youngest of 4 , 2 of whom have left school, and as early teens, have good jobs with great prospects. The others are too young. You expect the OP to distance her disabled child from the family unit by being transported seperately ?? You have no clue. What if only one parent can drive?

You truly are ignorant. Please don't even think of taking me on.

To the Op I apologise.I know I am providing a desired reaction to the troll, but I have watched this clown for too long not to react. The advice given from genuine posters above appears sound. Good luck with your new addition. I trust you shall reach a solution that will accommodate your family unit, including your special person.

Well said, I have no idea woh is person is, but am already finding her coments totally unhelpfull. are there no forum moderators on here to ban her or put a watch on her comments???????????????

cymrubaby - We had a motability grant earlier this year - we were asked for a deposit of £250 (£150 of which was covered by the dealer as they had a promotion of their own on at the time which they let us take advantage of, so always worth asking, especially now the market is so slow).

On the issue of income, we don't get IS or JSA, but IB and the usual selection of child/disability/carer benefits, and there weren't any issues with the grants department.

If they have any doubt about the suitability of the vehicle you've chosen, they will send someone out to the dealership to have a look at it with you before approving the grant - but it's as much to make sure you've not shortchanged yourself, as it is to make sure you're not trying to get a pricier option than required (our assessor actually upgraded us to a better model than we'd asked for due to things like added lumbar support etc)

Can I suggest taking a look at the Ford Galaxy if you haven't already - we have 3 children, and often have to transport another adult (6th person) along with hubbys larger-than average wheelchair, and the buggy for youngest, and find that with one of the back seats folded away it does fit. Obviously I don't know how your equipment sizes/shapes compare with ours, but just thought it worth a mention as until we physically tried it, we honestly didn't think it would all go in.

If you're talking about wheelchair accessible vehicles where you would be the driver and your wife would remain seated in her wheelchair accessing the car with a ramp, there are several available for a small advance payment of £150. These incluse the Berlingo, Kangoo and Doblo. The only difference with them is that you have to take them for 5 years instead of 3 years.

I recently applied for a grant, and they told me it would take approx 4 weeks for a decision.

  • Hi
i have been told by motability that i am entitled to a grant but a berlingo etc would be too small as my wife uses a xl wheelchair and is 16st and my son has to travel with a fold up wheelchair +carer when he travels with us he need 24hour care.so how do thay work out what vehicle suits are needs ?
  • Thundercat - they will take into account your household makeup, and any other people or equipment you need to transport due to the disability in question, and as I said in my earlier post, they will sometimes send an assessor out to look at the vehicles with you. They won't force you to take something that isn't suitable - it's not in their interests to foist something that's a 'just' on you if it means you'll have to end the agreement early to change models - they're looking for a long term fit, as in the end it's cheaper for them too.

Have you requested brochures etc yet for any suitable vehicles - obviously with WAVs it's not as easy to wander around a showroom, but I believe there are still places where you can take a look at them. The Motability site will give some info on this, and on general vehicle sizes etc.

Whilst we've never had to look into WAVs (yet), we have always found the grants people to be very helpful - especially if you can show you've done some legwork already in terms of discounting/checking suitability of vehicles - if you can give a valid arguement for/against a vehicle, in our experience, they will generally accept it.

Hi there, we looked at the galaxy but as all our children need car seats (4 kids) plus seats for myself and husband that's 6 seats already taken up leaving one spare seat in the boot and no room even when folded down. We'd have to put our three youngest children in middle row of seats (all in baby seats) and our eldest in the fold down seat at the rear on a booster seat. I really can't see how it would work but I can see why you suggested it because they are generally very roomy cars.
