have you considerd useing the award to buy a car outright . My youngest is autisic and get violent so now he is a teenager we need the space . I drive a kia seddona 7 seats but one can be taken out which would make room for a chair/ buggy and more space then a house . The good side is as you use the award as hp its yours at the end of the trem , also as these cars are high tax bands they are cheap to buy espically in the times in wich we live . However the car must be under 4 years old and i belive 50k on the clock . You would be responsable for car insurance mot etc but it might get the op out of the hole she is in .0

. Don't get me started on their unfair automatics policy, infact i think i burst a blood vessel at the mere mention of motability.
Although this may not apply to all, but for those who obtain their Motability car using the War Pensioners Mobility Supplement (WPMS) and need an automatic car because of their War Pensionable disability, the Service Personnel and Veterans Agency (SPVA) will give a grant of upto £660 to cover the Advance Purchase cost difference between a manual and automatic car of the same make/model/trim level.
If the differance between the automatic and manual is less than £660 then the amount of the grant only covers the actual differance, if it is over £660 then the claimant has to pay the differance over and above the £660.00 grant.
To claim this grant the WPMS recipient will need to contact the SPVA in advance of ordering their Motability vehicle in order for their entitlement to be confirmed although once claimed, subsequent claims should be more or less automatic via the Motability computer system. .It is not means tested in any way. The SPVA will also pay for any number of other adaptations upto a set limit.
Just thought I would mention this as a lot of War Pensioners are not aware of this grant.

Is there anything similar for DLA claimants who need an automatic car?
Thanks0 -
Sorry have to agree with the other poster the grants are there to help those who NEED them through disability not because you have chosen to have a larger family. Every time the system is abused like this someone in genuine need misses out.
You have ever right to have as many children as you wish but you should cover the increased costs yourself.Barclaycard 3800

If you're lucky enough to be able bodied and have able bodied children so that you can use public transport and don't need a car then that's great. Once you are disabled or have had a disabled child then you need the car therefore why does it matter if you choose to have more kids - you'd need the car whether you had them or not.Eat food. To be honest I don't know as I get WPMS. Perhaps one of the DLA recipients may know if there is a specific 'automatic car' grant available.
Peter.
Thanks anyway. I rang Motability this afternoon and unfortunately the £660 grant towards automatic cars is for war pensioners only. Now, I am not having a dig here, and war pensioners probably thoroughly deserve it, but it does seem a little discriminatory for want of a better word, that there is not an equivalent non means tested grant for DLA people who need an automatic car, particularly as when on DLA we have to pay a higher deposit/advanced payment on the scheme than the war pensioners anyway. Oh well back to plan B! Tally0 -

War pensioners mobility supplement pays an extra £5 ish a week compared to the DLA version, which when signed over for a motability car for 3 years is an extra £700, which is why a deposit would be smaller.
Bear in mind also that war pensions and associated allowances are compensationary. i.e Given as compensation for the disabling injuries.
This Armed Forces compensation scheme was updated in 2005 to become fairer and more in line with civvie street, where lump sums and loss of earnings are now given instead, whilst still being entitled to claim DLA. By comparison War Pensioners get a raw deal financially and become a good deal to the british taxpayer.
That does not mean though that i don't thoroughly agree with what you say about the unfairness involved in paying extra if you need an automatic.0 -

What a load of tosh it doesn't matter unless you CHOOSE to have a larger family when you already have a suitable car. As a disabled household I wouldn't choose to have more children as there is enough pressure but if I did I wouldn't expect someone else to pay.
