What should I sell on ebay??

  • Well from my experience:

    - adult clothes sell better in the run up to xmas
    - books are better off selling through amazon
    - ps2 games can go quite well, but it depends - roleplay games seem to do best for me
    - collectable figurines sell at any time but must in in mint condition
    - jewellery sells better in late january until 1 week before valentine's day

When i have anything to sell i look at completed listings to see if it's worth it. I won't sell unless i get at least £3 otherwise it won't cover listing, final and paypal fees
Still wish I could buy a TARDIS instead of a house!
  • i bought loads of stuff off a catalogue overstock website (football shirts, trainers, jackets) and nearly tripled my outlay, which was nice! :T
trouble is its a bit hit and miss but when you find the good stuff its well worth it! not sure if i can post the website address on here but if you pm me i'll be more than happy to point you in the right direction!! :D

I think one of the posters you were talking about was me :p Yes, I do sell quite a lot on Ebay and make lots of money, but I have been selling a long time and you get better with practice. At the end of the day you need to learn to sell snow to an eskimo :Dthat's when you become good and make serious money.

The feedback issue is major, all buyers buy more from sellers with good feedback. The more you sell, the more great feedback you get, the more you sell, if you get my meaning.

I started off about 4 years ago on Ebay, it was still quite young then. The first thing I sold was a leather jacket I didn't wear and I wrote a long description of how good it would look on a babe, as I was one and it looked great on me! :p which it did, but I had bought another one and didn't want to wear it anymore. I sold a 'dream' of an item that would enhance a gal's attractiveness and the girl who bought it loved it. She went out in it, wrote me a cracking email thanking me and told me how she had pulled in my jacket I sold her! I was delighted and that was the start of it.

I then proceeded to sell odds and ends I didn't want anymore. I did have a lot of stuff, having never been shy at shopping and I get bored with things easy and so had lot's to sell. Another thing that helped is that everything I sold was good stuff. Nothing cheapo and the bidders like that. They get good quality gear at a good price. All Ebay buyers love a bargain!

It's important to be friends with your bidders. I answer all emails as if they are my best friend. I always go the extra mile. Example: 2 years ago I sold a student Doctor some jeans my hubby no longer wore, they got lost in the post. I hounded the postal services and traced them. He got his jeans 2 weeks late but he got them. The feedback I received from him reflected my dedication and he told all his college about me. Thus, a little dedication got me more sales!

You see a pattern here? It's like anything in life, you get out of it what you put in to it. The harder you work, the luckier you get!

I started making gemstone jewellery, started selling that. I got bored with that, looked for something else etc. Keep it interesting and always find new things to sell. I scoured car boots sales and made a mint selling stuff I'd bought for sometimes pennies. I then decided to register as a sole trader and enable myself to buy things at trade prices. The sky was then only limited by how much work I wanted to do and how much time I had.

I designed my own web site, sent Ebay traffic to it, got sales from all over the world etc. It's easy if you put your mind to it.

I'm not a sole trader anymore, I did my time, wanted to work less etc. I made my money and enjoyed it. I now just sell my own stuff :p I don't want anymore and still make more than a part-time wage for about 2 hours work a week. Most of my time is spent chatting via e-mail to my buyers. They love me and I love them. They buy me life's little luxuries and I give them a dream. Be it 'make-up' for a prettier face, sexy gear for a better love life or nice things to make their own little palace a heaven on earth for them. As an Ebay seller you are a seller of dreams. That's the best advice I can give you!

Also join Freecycle network, there will be a group near you.....if you want a link to find a group to join, PM me with the area you live in and I'll send it. Lot's of people on Freecycle can't be bothered to sell their stuff. They kindly recycle it and give it away. Take advantage of opportunities like this to sell things and make money. You'd be surprised what people will buy if you sell it well.

Clear out your house of junk. Sell it well. Describe why they need to have it. Make them want it so bad that they buy it! Your words sell your item for you. Remember Your junk is another's treasure....design a great 'ME' page....promote yourself, at the end of the day you are a seller. Sell yourself and your goods. List it, get GREAT feedback...always pack your stuff professionally. Give away little 'free' gifts in your parcels. Make them want to come back for more! When you've sold everything, start looking around for things to sell. Buy on the internet, sell on Ebay. Buy from car boots, sell on Ebay. Buy from charity shops, sell on Ebay...make things, sell on Ebay.

Hope this has helped, good luck!

    Ember,

I must admit that you are one of the people I'd read had sold lots on ebay and wondered how you did it!

Thanks SO much for taking the time to write such a detailed and interesting post. I have definately taken your ideas on board (and have already registered with my local freecycle group).

Thanks also to everyone else for your suggestions, you've been very helpful. Keep em coming!

Just a note for you all on this point brought up by toontastic, if you sell your own things that you have previously bought or being given, there is no legal obligation to pay tax on the income. You can check with the tax office if you doubt this point. You are required to pay tax if you 'buy to sell' etc. When you register as a sole trader you are required to register for tax. However, remember that you can earn the full personal tax allowance before you will be required to actually pay tax so you can earn up to around £92 a week without actually paying any tax as a sole trader. You would be required to also pay class 2 National Insurance Contributions (about £2 A week as a sole trader - self employed) so even if you go as a sole trader you can earn a good whack without tax affecting you.

I buy and sell stuff on ebay that I get from my company (I buy the overstocks etc) and its just one of my revenue streams ;)

But the girlfriend had a clearout of clothes (as she has gone from a size 32 to an 18 in a short time ;) ) and she had loads and loads of clothes and she just does them in batches of a dozen or so. As for is it worth it, well she cant use them anymore (and strangely she offered them to other bigger girls who got offended, god knows why as she is a stylish chick) and she is currently making £200 a week by doing this.

  • I can't seem to get it right. For example, I put on a top from Monsoon say, and I get £1.04 for it. I am not near a poundland, so I get my jiffy bags from ebay sellers, so they are still expensive enough. I don't like excessive post and packaging charges, but by the time you add up the jiffy bag, the ebay charge, the paypal charge, and the post (I would like to add the 66p or so pence for recorded mail because a couple of people have taken the mickey in the past) it really mounts up. I take really good photos, iron the items carefully and wrap them well. It is a lot of work for a quid...

I have hit lucky once or twice with a CD, and a buggy raincover* but really find selling clothes not worth it. Perhaps I am lacking in imagination? Perhaps my clothes are horrible? LOL! Seriously though, if anyone can let me know of overstock or wholesale suppliers, I am sure I would make a brilliantly talented Ebayer!

*good hint there for anyone who can get them wholesale!

    Hi guys,

I've read the ebay board but wanted to ask my pals on DFW ;)

I've been selling my kids' outgrown (decent quality) clothes on ebay to raise a bit of extra cash, but to be honest with you it only brings in a couple of quid here and there. That's fine, don't get me wrong cos I'm grateful for every penny :p !! I've read that some of you make quite a decent income from selling on ebay and just wondered if you could give me some good ideas for what to sell?

    Thanks!

Most important in selling on ebay - pick your time right. Try to get auctions that finish between 7pm and 10 pm and if pos, on a friday or sunday night. Don't know why friday - but my stuff always sells much better then!

sell it all, but be honest about it all - much more likely to get a decent sale
