    With EO 12.

    monthly Direct Debit discount: 6%
    dual fuel discount: 2%
    online account discount: 9.5%

(They're still more expensive than many others, though.)

And where do you get even 6% net after tax interest on your savings, anyway?

I'm not arguing with you. Just wondered how you reached the 17.5% figure.

I can only get the 6% as i'm on their heatwise tariff and no gas. They won't let heatwise customers have the online discount for some reason. Trust me, I have tried!
  • Thank you Jubbs for your helpful replies. Especially for the customer service email.

As to SwanJon and KimYeovil, I perhaps did not explain properly. I am not in debt to Eon. I am in credit. The situation I am referring to, I have found out, is being reviewed by the " powers that be" because they are of the same opinion as myself, Utility companies are paid in arrears (except for prepaid meters). The whole DD situation is being reviewed. I do not know if it is legal to extract payments for services not given.

There have been too many complaints about this, so they are looking into it.

As to these great returns that KimYeovil is quoting, I am assuming you are referring to the discounts Eon is giving. I started out with 22% discount with PowerGen, this was stopped by Eon and I am now getting 6% discount, If you can get 17.5% from them, you are doing well.

    Thanks for your input.

I'm not arguing either. I just mean that sticking the money Eon 'owes' you from direct debit 'overpayments' is not going to earn 6% net interest in a bank account.

I would much rather if direct debit 'discounts' were banned and we went back to the good old days when monthly payments were one-twelfth of the annual bill and whether you were in credit or debt depended on when you joined the supplier - ie those who join in winter were in debt whereas those who join in spring and summer were in credit. And instead of 'discounts' we should go back to penalties for late payment.

Stellar, I never said you were in debt now, I said you had been in the past as below.
I was paying DD £53 per month and at the winter periods paid two extra sums and cleared off any excess there was.
As I am all electric I am a high user.
In January, there was a short fall of £79, this I paid on the 22nd
I do not know if it is legal to extract payments for services not given.
But the services have been given.
Taking a quarter starting on 1 Jan, you use gas each day from 1 Jan to 26 Jan. You make a DD payment on 26 Jan.
You continue to use gas until 26 Feb. You make a DD payment on 26 Feb.
You continue to use gas until 26 Mar. You make a DD payment on 26 Mar. The company invoices you for three months gas use on 31 Mar.

Probably over the summer you will pay more each month than you are using, and the opposite in the winter, but this overpayment is expected to balance the underpayment, so the services are not given (yet) but are expected - like a deposit on a holiday (for example). If you leave the company, move house or cancel the DD any overpayments will be refunded.

E-on doesn't owe me any money. But otherwise, yes, I would agree with you.
  • Aaaaah that's where we are going wrong, Eon does owe me money and we are in the winter period. The minute I see a debit, I pay it off and this happens every winter quarter.

Had a thought about the 17.5% that KimYeovil says Eon are giving him. You cannot take 3 discounts and add them up to get 17.5%. Well, you can, but you are kidding yourself. Do the sums ! You can bet they are not losing anything.

Eon took over Powergen many years ago but it kept the brand as more people recognised the name Powergen than they did Eon. They changed the name to coincide with the FA cup sponsering as it would be in the public eye.

The discounts depends on what tariff you are on and where you live. My bill of £349 was reduced by £30 with the DD discount which I get for the price protection tariff. The energyonline tariff gives the most discount. I was getting around 16% but changed to the price protection as the proposed increase Feb 08 worked out at more than the discount I was getting.
