  • The size that the tree will grow to depends on the rootstock that the seedling is grafted on to. Not sure what this is in the Lidl case (does anyone else know?), but there's quite a lot of useful information about this and other fruit tree related issues at www.keepers-nursery.co.uk

If you're planning on growing fruit trees, this site is definitely worth a look.

ditto... we have 10 months left on our tenancy but you often have to wait a couple of years before fruit trees do anything. will the Lidl trees be small enough to put in a large pot with handles for a couple of years? £4.48 at B&Q for those flexible basket type ones I think. Also, for the more experienced, if you have a really small garden/patio can you plant two varieties in a pot and twist the stems as you do for trees like Ficus? My mum's done this with blueberries and it seems to work.

  • Hello. I bought a cherry and an apple from lidl last year. The cherry is in a big pot and the apple in 1/2 and old water butt! They both had leaves last year but didn't do anything else - I just put this down to being in a new place and 'settling'. Hopefully they will both fruit this year, they have buds already so here's hoping (keeping my fingers crossed). My friend also had an apple, pear and a plum - she had five/six apples grow (I was so jealous! ha ha), but nothing on the others!

I am so looking forward to home-made cherry pie with home-grown cherries!

  • Don't they say pears for heirs.....you have to wait quite a while for any pear action!

I think that might be the shape of woman needed for heirs... child bearing hips and all that :-)

sorry, must stop being facetious, yes, my dad tried planting pear trees, his started cropping just before they moved house 13 years later, I was amazed that he waited so long without ripping them out.

My Golden Delicous from Lidl fruited the first year, I had it in a large pot

The second year also fruited, but I think pot growing did not suit it as it was a bit poorly looking, so it is now in the open ground around my son's house

Is this price right Faraway as my local Lidl is also offering these on Thursday but at £5.99 each. I'd hate to think Lidl had joined the "let's rip off Northern Ireland customers" brigade.
