Agree Rohan are very good, check coats are waterproof not just showerproof and are long enough to cover your bum!

Me and the OH are going to Keswick in February and we really need some decent coats to take with us.

Anyone got any ideas as to where we can get cheap, but good quality coats?

    Thanks in advance

Unless you plan on doing any serious outdoor stuff ie.walking up a mountain, I'd save your money and take what you usually wear in the winter.

I got a great Regatta Polartec Fleece half price from their Swindon outlet a few weeks ago, they had loads of other walking/outdoof stuff as well.

They have other outlets around the country as well

    Try this place:

http://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/ - Cheapest in the UK.

In regards to a coat look for a Gore Tex shell, Berghaus is a good bet. Under your coat wear a fleece and under that wear a T shirt.

The coat keeps the wind and rain out, the fleece keeps the heat in and a Tshirt carries the perspiration from the body which is then expelled through the Gore Tex shell.

In other words you stay dry and warm on the inside.

A cotton t-shirt won't wick moisture away you need a porper base layer for this to work.

There are also other fabrics apart from Gore-Tex, Event is very good for instance.

OP, if you are not planning on going up any mountians there is no need to spend a fortune. A basic waterproof will do.

If your'e near a Decathlon store they sell some great stuff, otherwise try Milletts or Blacks. Go Outdoors are an excellent shop if there is one near you, they tend to have some good bargains.
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions, I will be looking at them all!

We are going to be walking up mountains and if I only wore what I wear in winter, I would be wearing a very unsuitable formal work coat!

I'm not planning on spending a fortune, but we do plan on spending more time walking in the Peaks so will need to get some coats anyway.

    Thank you again!

I was in TKMaxx yesterday and they had loads of waterproof jackets.
Obviously it is a bit of hit and miss in there but good prices and some very serviceable stuff

    Who said cotton t shirt?

And Goretex is the best material for letting heat out and stopping rain get in.

It's not a good idea to buy these by mail order as size, fit, shape and comfort vary a great deal - but there should be somewhere fairly close that has a good range - or wait till you get to the lakes as others have suggested.
