    I have since reinstalled Sun JVM and removed the Microsoft, i.e. reverted to last known working state but still the same problem...

    Try this Just have the desktop and no programs running.

    Insert your restore or XP disc and then close the programme down if it
    starts up then, Start, Run, type sfc /scannow

    Leave PC alone whilst its doing this.

    It maybe a Mcafee auto update that could of caused the glitch
    or a router problem.........

    I am 99% sure it's not the router as I have reset it a few times and if that was the case I would expect the other pc to behave in the same way.

    I have just uninstalled Mcafee, again to no affect...

    This might be way out - but check your Hosts file... nothing's in there stopping access to certain IPs, is there?
