I have a very strange problem in that I can ping most websites but can't view them in IE.
For e.g. I can ping bbc.co.uk okay but cannot view it in IE. I can however open google and cahoot.
I have also tried FireFox but get the same problem
I have 2 PC's connected to a router the other PC has no problems accessing anything (hence why I am able to post this). Both PCs are XP SP2 with IE6.
It was all working fine but suddenly stopped working yesterday. I hadn't made any changes to the PC other than uninstalling Sun JVM and installing Microsoft VM but it was working after these changes until the next morning.
Does anyone have any ideas on this. I have tried all the obvious, i.e. deleting temp internet files, cookies etc, I am running Mcafee Virus 7.1.
It is driving me mad!

Don't have a solution to your problem but experienced similar yesterday. Not as technical as you with all that pinging & stuff but I could not get onto certain sites yeterday, the 1's I use most often, it has come ok in the end. The only thing I did different yesterday was updating Microsoft Antispyware which I had not run for few months. I too am using McAfee (the latest 1), so maybe it is something to do with that & installing Microsoft stuff? Sorry couldn't help but maybe somebody else can see if there is a problem with the 2.0 -
Two things to check.
1) In the settings of Internet Explorer check that you are not using a proxy server.
2) Try any firewall software you have installed, which may be blocking web traffic.0 -
What Firewall have you got running on that machine.
I used to have problems accessing certain sites with ZoneAlarm Pro.
It boiled down the Privacy functions and just disabling them did not work.
Reverted to the Free ZoneAlarm Personal, which does not have Privacy functions and all was well again.-=Mr-J=-0 -

I am not using a proxy and have also tried turning off the firewall as well as disabling anti virus etc. Still same problem?I am a Mortgage AdviserYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as a Mortgage Adviser, so you need to take my word for it. Try browsing to the address by IP.
ie Ping https://www.google.co.uk, copy the IP address and paste that into your browser0 -
Just try this.
Open Internet Explorer, Tools, Internet Options, Programs Tab, Reset Web Settings
now take out the tick of reset homepage then click OK.
Also in Internet Options, Security Tab, Default Level, OK0 -

I have tried that and get the same problem. Incidentally I can open google.co.uk anyway. But if I ping BBC.CO.UK I get a reply 212.58.224.131. If I then type this into browser it won't connect just sits thereI am a Mortgage AdviserYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as a Mortgage Adviser, so you need to take my word for it.
