Virgins modem is a simple 'plug in and play'
So it must be the drivers in device manager (Like Pauly says)
Are there any yellow exclamation marks in device manager?

    no yellow !

Do you have anything under Network Adapters in Device Manager?
If I have helped in any way, and you feel like it - please press the thanks button

Having just crawled around the back of my Inspiron, I've had a look at the network connector.
Associated with it are two LEDs a green connection and a yellow data one are either of them illuminated on your PC, and for that matter does the relevant LED illuminate on your modem?
As the guys said before if you go on show all connections you should see one under High speed internet/local area connection.
That gum you like is coming back in style.
  • Reboot your computer and press F2 as soon as you see the Dell logo. Check under the tabs for System configuration and Basic device configuration settings for something along the lines of "Onboard LAN" and it should be enabled, if it isn't, change it to that.

Check in BIOS to ensure the onboard LAN is enabled. Reboot and press F2 on the post screen. You should have an option somewhere for onboard LAN. Make sure this is set to enabled

The 'ethernet' led does NOT light up on the modem
  • My dells came with a separate disc which had drivers on it, did you get one and have you run it? When I've sent Dells back for repair they have often reinstalled the OS and the drivers are not always put back on.
I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.
  • There are a couple of discs - 1 is for the monitor, the other has drivers etc on it - but it doesnt specifically mention 'network adapters' on
