I checked with them when I ordered my laptop, however, I am also a partner with them and became aware of the rise too late. I've been advised of this by my accounts manager at Dell and by 5 different people who I emailed in order to try to get the best deal :rotfl:

I realise this will probably end up getting in the techie thread, but why doesn't clobber post reasons for his/her statements? I've bought 12 dell machines in the lat 18 months, and had trouble with only 1 of them, and with this being resolved I got a spare 500GB hard drive, I got a new motherboard and 2 free Dell Dell 968 AIO printers!

We're now seeing the effects that the 'HPC doom crew' here ;) got pilloried for warning everyone about back when interest rates were slashed and the pound started it's long and steep plunge; Even though raw materials and shipping costs have fallen, so has the pound. Compunding that, the Yen has really strengthened (a lot of higher-end consumer electronics are still made in Japan).

That means that we in the UK don't get to see quite the same general falls in the price of goods as consumers in America or the Eurozone do - indeed, rises in many cases.

It basically means that Brits are getting squeezed from all sides ... job losses and lower wages, loss of spending power (higher prices due to currency devaluation) and loss of interest accrued from savings. On top of that a lot of people have debt - quite substantial in some cases and amongst the worst in the world - which will further hamper economic recovery. The reasons why the UK is going to be particularly badly hit as the slump deepens, in a nutshell.

I agree on Dell stuff - it's quite decent and a good price. I have two Dells at home and I'm typing this on one at work.... well made machines.

Every pound less borrowed (to buy a house) is more than two pounds less to repay and more than three pounds less to earn, over the course of a typical mortgage.

I'm not convinced about this prices up 10-15%, and certainly not across the range.
    Hexus

Netbook prices are still, for the most part, floating around the £250-£300 mark. If you're hoping to bag a bargain, though, take a look at Tesco's latest listing of Dell's Inspiron Mini 9.

The netbook itself launched early in September '08 and carried a lofty asking price of £299. Today, it's available from Tesco.com for the tidy sum of £194.76, including delivery - that's £50 less than buying from Dell direct.
Looking at Dell now, January '09, the top of the range Inspiron Mini 9 is priced at £279 including VAT and Shipping, and the entry model which matches the one in the Hexus review, now priced at £249.

It is on business units (Optiplex etc)
But I can asure you next month they will be up. (They have held back some increases due to it being end of quarter this month.)
Asus and many other manufacurers put up prices at the start of Jan also.
If the £ reclaims some ground against the $ though they should drop.

But in general prices have come down in $ but the devaluation of the £ as actualy made them go up.

If you google search you can normally find a promo code for £50 off or something for Dell puters, which I did.

I think you and I probably define "work" in different ways. For you it seems to mean somewhere you go to spend all day on MSE and lecture us on how the government are deficient. Since, I, the taxpayer, seem to be paying you do this I don't really know how you have the gall tbh.

If there was ever an example of why this country is going to the dogs, it's probaby the fact that people who work for Stockport CC have nothing to do and are paid well for doing it:rolleyes:. Think maybe I will vote Tory....

From previous years of watching Dell prices pre/post xmas, they always put their prices up this time of year - they price competitively pre-xmas to get the sales, and then price up around Feb, once the sale period is over.

Whilst this may signal higher prices to come - and I would expect to see them, owing to the fall in sterling - I don't think this swallow makes a summer - yet, anyway.
  • Glad I ordered my new Dell desktop PC after Christmas then. £100 off in the sale and free delivery too.

Whats all this Dell bashing? Every PC in my company (1,000s of them including the one I'm typing on) is Dell and they're reliable. I've just retired a 5 year old Dell tower thats still working flawlessly and have a Dell laptop at home whose only problem is a dead Sony battery.

Thats more to do with their end of quarter.

I have spent the last 15 years selling and buying IT equipment, but what would I know.

I buy a lot of IT stuff, and as the pound falls, the IT equipment keeps getting more and more expensive. Our toner cartridges have gone from £58 to £74 over the month (and everywhere has risen in line pretty much). Paper has gone up etc.

With IT stuff, business equipment will suffer the £ fall first, as once equipment is in place it's difficult to get out of things, like buying the consumables to run it.

With home users, they won't notice as much, it's easy enough for dell to just slap a lower end component in, and keep the price the same.

When your ordering the same stuff over and over though, you do notice, and it has happened!
