New Memory Needed

Zebra

My desktop PC has 256MB memory and is running Windows XP Professional.

It's running a bit slow and I think it could do with some more memory.

I've looked at Ebuyer but there seems to be lots of different types, and I'm not sure what I need or how to fit it.

Any advice appreciated!

  • It would help if we knew what motherboard you have installed in your machine.

A quick way to find out is to download and run belarc
When you have run it, the page should tell you what Motherboard it is, It will be under "Mainboard"

    I've got SIW installed.
The motherboard is a Gigabyte Technology model 7VKML version 1.x
  • That's even better,

Ok the mobo needs PC1600/DDR200 or PC2100/DDR266 DDR memory and can handle a max of 2Gb in 2 x 1Gb

Obviously XP handles with more ram but I am not sure spending £60 to get you to 2MB is sensible,. So on that basis, I would suggest 2 x 512Mb of Kingston from Ebuyer totalling £25

That's great RRE - thank you!

Where did you get that memory information from?

Does that mean the motherboard just has two slots, so I need to replace the old 256Mb with one of the new 512Mb and add the other one in the empty slot?
  • From the Giga-byte site

That's exactly right, remove the 256 and put in the 2 x 512MB

I take it that the PC2100/DDR266 is better than the PC1600/DDR200?

Is it possible to get one 1GB instead of two 512MB?

Edit: Found them now at Ebuyer - and two 512MB is cheaper than one 1GB!!

This place is quite cheap from memory http://www.funkygiraffe.co.uk/
  • It is possibly but 1 stick of 1Gb costs £30 You could get the one initially and then purchase another later, but to be fair I think you would be wasting your money

DDR266 is approximately 1/3 faster than DDR 200 . The number relates to the data transfer in million bits per second so DDR 266 transfers up to 266,000,000 bits per second and DDR 200 at up to 200, 000,000 bits per seconds

    Ooops! Wrong type of RAM!
Everybody is equal; However some are more equal than others.
  • Thomas,

the fact that they can't get the number of pins right on DDR ram would put me off straightaway, they may not even send the right one! ;)
