Thanks for the info but after reading a few of the latest posts on here I may use the rubble sacks that I bought from Poundland instead. I can easily move those if I need to.

The rubble sacks are about the size of a carrier bag, would I get away with putting two potatoes in there or should I stick to one per bag?

i would try one per bag, but i find it easier to have many tubs on the go planted a few weeks apart to lengthen my crops season...

So, how did everyone get on with their potato growing last year?

I've been reading this thread with interest as I've been tempted to buy Gro-kits, but put off by the price of £8.95

What worked for you? I've got plenty of Ikea bags, so thinking of using them

The flexible tubs are 2 quid at Asda at the moment, would look great(a bonus) to have multi coloured buckets for your veg. I used the Ikea bags last year and they were very successful. I saw on Gardeners world they folded a growbag in the middle - still full of compost - and cut them across so each half was a free standing bag then put a tomato plant in each and they were very successful, last year Homebase had growbags for 98p

For those wanting rubble sacks for the potatoes. You can also buy them in the normal household section along with the house dustbinliners etc in Morissons.I bought mine a few weeks ago but i think i paid £1.80 for 8 they are labelled as DIY sacks, a blue roll & 80% recycled.
They where a lot cheaper than in the big DIY next door (i know bacuse i went & checked the price in ther first). This may help someone or save them a trip to the DIY if they can just throw them in with the weekly shop.

  • Hi

We would like to try growing spuds for the first time.

We have two standard black dustbins but they were used as dustbins before. Could we just soak them in water and bleach or something to clean them?

Also they are obviously unsightly - could we keep them down the bottom of the garden behind the shed? Only problem is not much sun/light gets there so would they grow there or do they have to be put in a sunny spot?

Thanks in advance for any tips from those in the know!

The bins will be fine, scrub out with hot water and bleach or hot water jeyes fluid. You do want some light, but sun all day isnt necessary. When the weather gets a lot better if you have them in a spot that is too sunny and hot you are watering them all he time! Ive grown them in old buckets, growbags on end, compost bags, etc.

I had best results with first earlies, rocket are good for a starter, but then I got onto the premium varieties that cost a bit more in the supermarket, like anya etc.
