The tv doesn't look too big but when the tv is on our eyes just cant adjust to the picture and my partner just physically cant watch it.

We're sat as far back as possible to the tv which is about 8ft away. It's on a unit at the moment- don't know if it would make any difference on a wall?

Thats the settings then. Go into the PICTURE menu and switch off EVERYTHING you can (noise reduction, contrast enhance etc)
Get a hold of a THX setupdisc and set the contrast and brightness and turn the colour up or down until everything looks 'natural'
Whats the make and model of the tv?

  • The Model is a Sony Bravia 40v4000.

Im not saying these settings are perfect, but ill quote a guy off another forum so you have something to go off (But you really should get a hold of your own THX setup disc)

"I too have recently bought this tv and was initially disappointed with picture quality with Sky+. After reading some other AVForum threads and experimenting a bit, I've found that the following works well:-

    Picture mode: Standard
    Backlight :4
    Contrast: 80
    Brightness: 50
    Colour: 50
    Colour Temp: Cool
Sharpness: 15 (some users recommend 3 or lower - I think not!)
    Noise Reduction: Off
    MPeg NR: Medium
Adv. Settings - Adv. Contrast Enhancer: Off
Adv. Settings - Live Colour: Off

In addition your Sky+ should be set as follows:-

    Select 'Services' using your remote
    Select 'System Set Up'
    Select 'Picture Settings'
    Picture Format: 16:9
2nd Location Picture Format: 16:9 (for 2nd telly if connected I think)
    Scart Control: On
Video Output: RGB (this makes the biggest difference!)
    Contrast: Low
    then, Save New Settings"

Personally i think when he talks about the sharpness, it SHOULD be 3 or under (Nearly everyone tries to set sharpness to high, and it looks awful)

Actually ~ this one sounds a lot better ~

    Picture mode: Standard
    Backlight :4/5
    Contrast: 80
    Brightness: 50
    Colour: 45-50
    Colour Temp: Warm 1/2
    Sharpness: Min/1
    Noise Reduction: Off
    MPeg NR: Off
Adv. Settings - Adv. Contrast Enhancer: Off
Adv. Settings - Live Colour: Off

Bare in mind also that new tvs take a bit of a 'run in' period. And that INCLUDES the settings you use.
In example, my dad just yesterday got a hold of a 'shop soiled' Pioneer 50" which theyd had switched on in the shop since mid november. PLENTY of time for the plasma to run in youd have thought. But EVERY picture enhance was switched ON and it looked absolutely awful when we first switched on. I switched everything off and it took a good 4 hours or so before the picture really started to look a lot better.

Bare in mind, those settings are for connecting a dvd player or sky or whatever. Freeview, particularly if you have a dodgy signal, can look awful. So you may want to switch on the noise reduction when watching freeview (And look into a better aerial and cable)
A decent tv will allow different settings for each input. Wether yours does or not I really dont know.
For best viewing quality, a HDMI cable is best.

    Best of luck :)

Just ask if youve any questions

Hope you get sorted, I know what you mean about not being able to physically watch it - our next door neighbour bought a 37" samsung and it makes my eyes go funny and I can`t look at the screen for longer than a few mins - don`t think its adjusted properly. Another neighbour has a large TV not sure about the make but its great and the picture is so good.

I am the opposite as you...I got a Sony Bravia 32v4000 just 4 weeks ago and now wish I had got a 40". I was a bit numb when I measured the previous Toshiba I had, it was a 27" so I thought I could go a little bigger so opted for a 32", but I hadn't considered the TV surround, so as it has turned out I could now just about fit a 40" in the same space. I did consider taking it back to exchange but the terms of sale do state that if the box has been opened etc then there will be a restocking charge so I didn't bother....gutted I was I can tell thee.
