I don't particularly want to go, but my parents/grandma would probably kill me if I didn't. They only want a photo of me looking stupid, but I'd never live it down if I didn't get them one.

If you do end up not going, make sure you graduate in absentia: it could cause you problems later if the university still has you on roll, and you never know when you might need the certificate...

I didnt have to pay for graduation, as such. But the costs were:

£5 for an extra ticket (got 2 free and bought one extra for the BF)
    £30 for gown and cap
£80 for photos (this was 2 big ones of just me, 3 big ones of me and BF, 5 little ones of just me)

And that was is. I think it was £10 per person to go to the after graduation meal but I didnt go as I went on holiday instead :D (early morning flight the day after)

I would go - you've worked so hard for your degree and it would be a shame not to take part in the cermonial side of it. I went to my mum's degree ceremony in Glasgow last year when she graduated from the OU and it spured me on to sign up for my degree course.

I'm with Aspiring, now I've started my degree I have an imagine of myself in my gown strutting up to the stage to collect my fake certificate, keeps me going when I can't be bothered opening my books!

    Very informative and appreciated. :)

I'm assuming there is a place where you hire the gown and cap and they have a plentiful supply of one-size-fits-all? :D Would that be the campus or an outside hire?

Ooooh, hark at me - I don't even start until September :rotfl: I'm getting a bit ahead of myself :rotfl: :rotfl:

Still, best to know these things so I can budget ahead.

Cap and gown you generally hire from Ede and Ravenscroft - we did it all online and you order your size (I think you fill in chest and head measurements, and height) and then they're there on the day for you to collect it all and to help you get it all on. Remember to wear a tucked in blouse with buttons lol ;) At least, that's how it worked for us and I'd assume it's pretty much the same everywhere..

One thing I was relieved to find out was that we only had to wear our caps when we filed out of the cathedral afterwards. Mine didn't fit too well at all and the thought of trying to hold it on whilst trying to look dignified as I shook the important person's hand was too much!
  • You generally hire from which ever company is providing the gowns for your university. Ede and Ravenscroft do alot but not all universities. You should be told the options and procedure when approaching graduation but the general information is probably hiding on your universities website somewhere.

The costs of graduation are university specific, although things like the photos, the dvds, graduation meals etc are all extras you dont have to have, but might want to budget on. Or farm off to the parents, I did that with the photos as I was happy with the friend with digital camera ones...

I would agree with what a lot of posters have said about it being for the parents, MY ds graduated last year and it was wonderful to watch - and yes we have a big photo on the side! Im awaiting the next one's graduation in a couple of years!!
  • My graduation for finishing last year is this Friday!! (too long after finishing IMO)

I'm not going, sadly my mother passed away the day after my last exam so it feels wrong to do it without my Mum and Dad there. I don't like these pompous ceromonies at the best of times! I've done the course, got my First Class BA Hons, and dont really feel the need to dress up in a silly costume for a day.

I hate the pomposity of it all too, and am seriously tempted not to go to mine either.

As for being too long, mine can be any time up to ten years after finishing! (I'd have to choose a date from the list when they run ceremonies, then just turn up with whoever else is going then.)

    My sincere condolences too. :(
