It's a pocket of poor.
Agreed. I really can't imagine what those 'developers' were thinking when buying this lot? It looked overvalued at the guide price £100,000?
I see Burberry had a factory in Treorchy which shut down three years ago.Probably one of the reasons the Working Mens Club shut down was because there were fewer people working there! Perhaps if they'd renamed it Treorchy Unemployed Social Club it would still be there!

Thanks PN for introducing me to HUTH - It's certainly changed my daily routine!0 -

No. This was a different one
The one you're on about was Kevin on behalf of the Royal British Legion Club in Cefn Cribwr. Auction date 4 September 2007.
This one was the Treorchy Working Mens Social Club. Auction date also 4 September 2007.
Ah yes you're right. It was the Legion not a working men's club!0 -
Why is this type of drivel still on tv.I came in to this world with nothing and I've still got most of it left. :rolleyes:0

I suspect the demographic is shifting though.0 -
Noticed the "grow your own veg" programmes that are flooding onto the TV now?
Nice if you have a garden. Dull if you don't.0 -
There was also recently a developer in Torbay who bought an old house, knocked it down and after a long wait for pp built an ugly block of flats. Last shots were of him on his yacht saying, despite EA advice, he wouldn't drop the price from £250k each but would wait for an upturn in the market. 'Seaways' flats by Oracle developments
Oooh, that was a major fail. The house was originally bought in 2004, for £500k, well over the asking price. Planned to knock it down and build flats, estimated he would be finished within 12 months, total costs £1.2m. 3 year wrangle with planning authorities just to get started. Eventually managed to get a block of 9 'luxury' flats built on the site. All still empty. Refuses to drop the asking price of £250,000 per flat at all "I know what they're worth."
EA didn't give a figure for the valuation, saying only that there was an oversupply of apartments in the area and he had to be realistic. Now on the market for £175k each.poppy100 -
Thanks for the Torbay flats Rightmove link, Dopester and Poppy. £175k is a bit of a drop from the £250k he seemed to be after on the programme. Also, as Poppy says, a quick look for that postcode on Houseprices.co.uk seems to suggest that none of these flats have been sold yet, but none are for rent on Rightmove either, so that is a big outlay for no return whatsoever.
I have some sympathy for small building firms that are going bust due to not being paid by their creditors, but none for guys like this. Perfectly nice house, now another block of ugly flats.
UK Style is 90% crappy programmes, with some decent stuff like DIY SOS. Mostly it's old BBC daytime shows with a few cheapskate made-for-UKStyle rubbish like 'Put You Money Where You Mouth Is'. Ok if you get it free, but not worth subscribing to.0 -

I was watching something over Xmas and they mentioned that in times of economic recession gardening programs get more popular due to people staying put.
So expect lots of gardening shows..............
BTW you can grow stuff you can eat inside on your window sills or a table as long at the room has enough light.I'm not cynical I'm realistic
(If a link I give opens pop ups I won't know I don't use windows)0 -

I love it as wellIt tends to always be the people who are buying the house to live there or really make a special effort with the improvements that come off the best.
I did feel a bit sorry for the Devon "seaways" chap, until he refused to lower the prices despite not selling a single property, "houses are only worth what people are willing to pay for them" as the mantra around here says so often.0
