I guess you can use any fish, really. I don't know if you're near a Morrisons, but I go there in an evening, and buy fish for the freezer for a matter of a few pence. Their hot smoked salmon (I get for 25p down from almost £3!) is fantastic - really sweet, and you only need a tiny bit for tons of flavour.0

Hot smoked salmon for 25p ?!?!?
Wow... thats really good.
I love hot smoked salmon... not so fussed on regular smoked salmon though
Firstly, is the haddock that you are using smoked ??
If it is, I am not so sure I would use the hot smoked salmon..
If its not I definately would
Or like Rikki suggest, a handful of prawns or some normal salmon.
If you are not so sure of doubling up on the fish, why dont you add some veg ?
Little broccoli florets, peas, sweetcorn, or carrots ??
It may help keep the cost down, if your family like veg... just add whatever they like.
I normally add at least 2 veg to my fish pie
And I always pre make it.... freeze it... defrost... throughly reheat.

I made a couple of large fish pies this afternoon and like always29, used some bits and pieces that I had in the freezer. I made two very large pies so my amounts probably wouldn't be suitable but basically method was :
Place salmon fillets, smoked haddock and cod in a large roasting dish, douse with a little olive oil, lemon juice, salt and pepper, cover with foil and then bake at 200c for about 10 mins.
Meanwhile I lightly boiled some petit pois and sweated some spinach down in a couple of tablespoons of water. Once the spinach had cooked down I squeezed all excess water out of it, placed it on a plate and topped with a teeny nob of butter and some black pepper.
After 10 mins the fish was taken out of the oven and left to cool.
It was then flaked into the pie dishes, mixed with peas and topped with the spinach.
I made a very thick white sauce, to which I added a little red leciester and some parmasan and spread over the spinach.
This was all topped off with some cheesy mash and baked at 200c for 30 mins and served with some savoy cabbage that had been sauteed with bacon.
Had an utter migraine all day so this was done in many, many stages but its a very forgiving and easy dish.
this sounds so lovely..I have added it to my meal plan this week...0 -
I quite often make fish pie.
I use whatever the 'T' Fish lady has on offer (frozen when I find it). I also add a couple of hard boiled eggs and peas to bulk it out.
Cook whatever fish you have in an ovenproof dish in milk for about 15 mins. remove from dish, flake, keep milk. Make white sauce with saved milk and extra. Add fish, peas, white sauce and eggs to ovenproof dish. top with mashed potato and cook for about 30 mins. Simple.
I hope it sounds as simple as it is, its a very filling and satisfying (most people say its sooo difficult to make) dish

I have got some boil in the bag fish with a butter sauce. I want to make a pie with them and add some prawns. Should I cook the fish first? Any help appreciated.

Yes, cook the fish first and add the mashed spuds on top, then add some grated cheddar and place under the grill or in oven for 15 mins.

I have 2 cod steaks in parsley sauce left over from a pack of four. They were pretty minging cooked as they were, so I'm thinking of turning the other two into a fish pie. Does anyone have any tips? Never made fish pie before!0

Hi
I did this last week with the same thing. I boiled them in the bag then I flaked them into a dish, tossed in a handful of prawns that were lurking in the freezer and added some sweetcorn. I also added a 1/2 tsp dill and then topped it all with mashed potato sprinkled with some cheese on top then baked the whole lot for 20 mins in a medium oven0
