I can assure you that you can keep bananas in the fridge. Some of the bananas are a bit black as they are a bit over 'ripe' but they were that way before they went in there.
I've always kept bananas in the fridge. Occasionally the skin goes a strange colour but the banana itself is absolutely fine.Moving onto a better place...Ciao :wave:0 -

lol what? How does " the misguided fear of saturated fat create[d] a nation of obese diabetics."
Diabetes, type 2 as to what he mentions, relates to insulin and glucose. Neither of which are saturated fat.
I spend about £30 a week for my food. This is from the slightly more expensive Teso Metro/Express & Sainsbury's Locals in Central London.
Everything is more expensive there. Except milk. Milk in London is 45p for 1 pint and 86p for 2 pints in every shop, from Waitrose, Morrisons, Tesco, Sainsbury's, M&S etc. while here at home 1 pint is 47p in the nearest Morrisons and 89p for 2 pints.0 -
I spend between £170 and £200 per month for two adults and one child, my eldest daughter has her boyfriend here at least 3 evening meals per week and my youngest and I take packed lunches to work/school, my eldest taking bits, fruit and soups to college and work but not a full packed lunch. That includes all cleaning products and toiletries and I am quite fussy when it comes to them!
I'd say we eat pretty healthily, I batch cook for the freezer and we always have fresh fruit and veg.

I assume you are referring to Tom Naughtons lecture, the two are related in that there has been this big "lie" been pushed upon the general public for the last 50 odd years about saturated fat being bad for us, many people have replaced fat with extra processed carbs (he shows the % change in diet in the lecture over the years). Go into most supermarkets and there is a huge amount of "weight loss" low fat food, most of which is higher processed carb, none of which I would touch with a barge pole.
Of course this is not the only reason for the recent shift to a higher processed carb diet, cost is another big factor. Processed grain and grain products are very cheap.0 -

I'm sure they have about a pint on their cereal in the morning, sometimes they'll have another bowlful for supper, hubby has several all milk coffees and the boys like milk and cookies.

Hi everyone just a thought on the bananas - I read recently if you keep them in the wrapping they come in (ie a plastic bag) or put loose ones in a bag they keep for longer.

Apparently if you put other fruit next to bananas it makes them ripen quickly. It worked on passion fruit!

fruit give of a gas that ripens them (ethylene?) so staying in close contact with other fruit especially if its riper makes them turn faster, some of the bags fruit is shipped in absorbs ethylene and slows the rippening process
cold also slows it down but turns nannas a disgusting black colour0 -
We aim for £50 p/w for me and OH and two rabbits, however the huge amounts of fresh parsley and rocket they eat means I rarely stick to this!0
