We're STILL under snow! I've really enjoyed being out and playing in it but it's been a week now and really I should be planting and not sledging so getting a bit fed up now!!
My pentland javelin potatoes are ready to go in now, and I went to morrisons yesterday for some of theit fresh flower buckets to plant them in, got 8 for 99p so as soon as the snow clears they will be going in.
I have so much I can be getting on with, could fill a whole day in the garden if only I could get out there!! Plus I'm away at half term, which is just under a week away and then I'll end up two weeks behind. I'm sure everything will soon catch up though.
Great news on the robin scotsaver, I love watching the birds in our garden, the blackbird is even tame enough to be only a couple of feet away from me when I'm feeding them or doing garden jobs.Debt busting! Jan 2014 £7632.50 £7445.80

oh i love reading this thread :j i managed to go out and do some bits and pieces over the weekend and got some mulch onto half the front garden just as the snow started on sunday.
i did mostly veg last year but i did grow some strawberries off of half a dozen Aldi strawberry plants. They went mental and put out 20+ daughter plants which actually don't seem to have stopped over the winter, i was moving all the pots over to a corner which gets the winter sun and i have put over a dozen more into the greenhouse, strawberry jam here i come!! so if you see them in Aldi this year its worth the investment if mine are anything to go by..Every Penny's a prisoner :T0 -
Finally I have reclaimed my garden back from the snow!!
It's still pretty cold out there but I did pop out for half an hour today to do a few little bits of jobs I was getting uneasy about. The strawberry plants are in the ground now, and the last dozen or so garlic clove seed things that I was desperate to get in. I've checked my sprout, cauliflower and brocolli seedlings which are under the cold frame and they seem to be doing great which is good news, hopefully some sunshine will do them some good and I'll be able to plant them out in a few weeks.
I also picked up 3 raspberry canes for £1.99 from instore today which I will hopefully plant out later this week, and I have planted more seeds in my bedroom window since putting the other seedlings under the cold frame. I now have chillis, nasturtiums, tomatoes, peas and something else which I can't quite remember.
I also had donated (I'm sure there is a proper word for these) some plastic arch things that are a couple of feet high that you put polythene over the top to make mini polytunnel/cloches with.
My garden is getting pretty full now so fingers crossed the allotment doesn't take too much longer!!
Oh, and I now have a thrush in the garden too. I thought I'd heard him and he came down today to pick through the fresh soil I had just dug.Debt busting! Jan 2014 £7632.50 £7445.80

Same thing has happened to me .....I've got the ones I'm chitting showing a small amount of sprouting, yet the ones in the bag (I really wanted to put these ones in a few weeks later) are showing much longer sprouts."Every time you feel yourself getting pulled into someone else's nonsense, tell yourself: Not my circus, not my monkeys." - Mark Borkowski.

Hi all, looking better now the snow is melting!
I have checked my cauli seeds and they have all germinated yay!! I am going to thin them and re-pot them in a week or so. Any tips with this? First year of trying cauliflower so don't want to get it wrong!0 -
hi mustafa, thanks bizare dont you think?
at least its not just me:rotfl: 0 -
SuzieMum - no problem with having too many cauliflower seedings but if you've got room to plant them all out, think what you'll do when they all mature and are ready for picking at the same time. Have you got room to freeze the surplus or are you prepared to give some away? The perennial glut problem is always a dilemma so best to think in advance how you'll cope with your surplus (if you get one) to avoid waste. If possible try not to plant them out where you've previously planted other greens such as cabbages & sprouts as they're of the same family and could develop clubroot, which is where the roots swell and the top growth dies.0
