The snow is amazing here too, it's the first time my 5-year-old has seen proper snow. He came in at 3am asking if school was closed so he could play in it all day. Unlucky, school was open, but closed early so we've been sledging and built two snow men. Just put stuff for a veggie soup in slow cooker so we can go out again tomorrow and come home to something warm to eat. Gardening out the window for now, time to have some fun!!!!Debt busting! Excellent pics!!
I have brought my pepper seeds inside from the porch to keep warmer. How do I know if I have lost them...should I just go ahead and sow some more? I have loads:-) they are in seed trays with clear plastic lids if that helps. Any tips appreciated.0 -
hi notenoughcash great thread and lots of followers so far, i`d like to join in please. we moved to this house last year after years of wanting a garden big enough to grow veg, anyway we were late starting last year but we did runner beans which we are still eating from the freezer, rhubarb which we have 5 of which are just starting to shute again although under snow at mo, sweetcorn. it was the 1st year for my gooseberry and blueberry so nothing from them but fingers crossed for this year . i have about 10 strawberry plants still alive from last season still, this year im hoping to become pretty much self sefficient in fruit and veg, im 31yrs married with 4 children (8yrs, 4yrs, 2yrs and 6mths) so a big family to grow for and im busy too still will be worth it. ive dug over last years patch and am planing to use more of the garden. this year im hoping to grow, runner beans, french beans, pea`s, carrots, swede, cabbage, cauliflower, shallots, leeks, brocolli, tomatoes, cucumbers, little gems, gooseberries, blueberries, rhubarb, raspberries, strawberries and possibily potatoes. im also a member of freecycle and will be asking to see if anyone has water butts or barrels going spare as with all that growing i really need to be storing as much rain water as poss. last year everything was bought as small plants but this year i want to grow where possible from seed, so will get started this month. i bought one of those plastic walk in green houses last year but unfortunetly has got really damaged over the winter so not sure what im going to do , dont want glass as kids, thinking maybe polytunnel, or making a leen to with perspex. anyhow very excited read though this site daily for inspiration and idea`s and have written lots of plans. can`t wait for weather to warm up so i can get started more, hoping to get into poundland this week as ive heard on this site they`ve got loads of seeds, bushes etc . anyway good luck everyone xOne day I will live in a cabin in the woods0

SuzieMum - re your sowed pepper seeds. Don't panic. Just poke a few more pepper seeds into your tray at one end and mark the location with a matchstick or stomething to remind you which end of the tray you popped them in. With the compost warming up in a warmer room, they may germinate even if the first batch don't. If the earlier sown ones do germinate and this process may have been delayed by cold compost) and you find you have too many you can just pull the surplus seedlings out. They take up to two weeks to germinate so check them regularly and as soon as you see something appearing, keep them warm and in as good light as possible.0

Thank you! Will do first thing in morning. I'd rather have too many than not enough. They are on a sunny windowsill still with lid on (have watered a bit to keep moist). Your tips are appreciated!0

Still covered in Snow here but the sun shining at the moment and heavy rain forecast for tomorrow so should be clear by then. Looks like Saturday will be dry and I can venture out there to make a start.:D
Finally made it to Lidl's this morning, as the School has been closed for 2 days I haven't been passed there, anyway, in there this morning and they have packets of Seeds starting at 28p a packet so may well be worth a look - I've already got more than I can cope with so managed to resist the urge."WASTE NOT, WANT NOT!"GC for OH, myself, DD18 & DD16 includes Toiletries, cleaning stuff & Food.

We're still covered in snow but school has stayed open and been a real nightmare getting there and back. We live at the top of a big hill and school is right down the bottom in the dip so spent most of the journey there on our bottoms! I di manage to make it into town today though and got to wilkinsons for the first time since they got garden stuff in. I bought some strawberries (those in a bag sat in compost that you just plant out) and more seed potatoes. A friend of my auntie's has donated me about a load of packs of seeds too, there's loads, parsnip, swede, carrot, lettuce, radish, can't remember what else, but plenty of them. Just need this cold snap to pass and some warmer weather to follow now!Debt busting! Jan 2014 £7632.50 £7445.80
