Double charge on carpet fitting by Carpetright

Hi all Just been stung by carpet right 20/11/10 . Purchased carpet at very cheap price - sales person never mentioned anything about delivery charge . When looked at bill found I had paid 45.00 for carpet and 39.00 !! for delivery and then had to pay cash for fitting a further 35.00. Now wishing I had gone to little carpet shop who don't charge for delivery only charge 2.00 psm for fitting. Could have purchased a better quality carpet....... and paid less. By the way please don't buy underlay from carpet right either, I got much better underlay on line and paid only 7.99 for delivery from Poole against the 39.00 I paid for 4 miles....0

just so that u are aware the extra charges made for del and hall/stair extra! work, not one penny goes to the fitter even though its the fitter that dels the carpet and cuts up the carpet if its a stair .carpetright charges the fitter for each day they work0

Hi all. I have been fitting carpets since 1985 and have fitted many carpets where people have purchased from carpetright and declined the use of their in store fitters. I do not agree with the delivery charge, as the fitter needs to get to the house to fit the job and so takes the carpet with him, the fitter never sees this money, it goes straight into carpetrights coffers.
As for the stairs "surcharge" I do charge an extra £15 (as do most if not all fitters) and the reason is when fitting a stairs I have to measure the hall, stairs and landing, make these shapes and sizes fit in the correct direction and ensure they fit the size of carpet purchased. 10-15 minutes planning time. Now I have to transfer that plan to the carpet and cut it to size 15-30 minutes depending on size and how complex the job is. Now by this time an average 13x12 bedroom carpet could have been fitted, yet I haven't even opened my toolbag to start the job! Also if the customer has requested new door bars these take 5 minutes each to remove old measure cut and fit the new ones and then fit the carpets in the bedrooms/ lounge etc into the other side of the bar. So 3 beds, bathroom, airing cupboard, lounge, diner, kitchen that's 8 bars and 40 minutes gone. The grippers and underlay all have to be measured and cut to size before laying, then finally you can start to fit the carpet after an average time of 90 minutes to prepare the job. Could have fitted 2-3 bedrooms by now!
So basically the surcharge covers my time. An average room takes 30-40 minutes to fit, a hall, stair & landing in the same carpet will take around 3 hours to fit. I hope this explains the need for a surcharge.
Finally United carpets also do the same, they charge £30 for a stairs surcharge and the fitter gets £10 of it! (this may vary from store to store as they are a franchise)0 -
Well I speak to a lot of people who say that shops are generally charging twice as much as I do. I did a room this morning which I charged £30 for and the shop in question quoted £70 - I certainly dont know how they justify this.0

The usually cost of fitting a Carpet is around £1.90 per square metre (depending which area you live in) HSL which is hall stairs and landing is usually £25 extra because of the extra time in involved, Carpet right charge the customer £2.60 a square metre making 70p a square metre on the fitting, they also like you mentioned before charge £25 for delivery, they do not employ their own fitters they have sub contractors who brings the carpet with them on the day none of the delivery charge gets passed on to the fitter.
Their extras are also very expensive underlay rolls average around £75.00 for the cheapest also gripperods or smooth edge they are sometimes usually known as Carpetright charges £2.25 a length you can buy all of the above mentioned at a website called carpetunderlayshop.co.uk you can buy a complete box of gripperods for around £17.00 + Vat and each box contains around a hundred lengths, i recently completed a full house for carpetright and the bill for the griperods alone came to a staggering £225.00 a profit of £200 a box, underlay for a decent one will set you back £45.00 at most they also so supply door trims as well.0 -
Hahahahaha
I hope you fit carpets quicker than you respond to questions on the internet.

When I queried the cost for delivery of the carpet of £29 - surely the fitters were picking up from store prior to fitting - I was told that the charge was for the carpet to be delivered to store from their suppliers up north. Had the carpet fitted last month. Fitters would not take a cheque. "We only take cash!" £82 for fitting a 24 ft by 12 foot room. It was never confirmed whether they were actually FITA registered. Carpetright would not supply the FITA number for them but they supposedly only use FITA fitters.0

Charging an extra £25.00 surcharge for fitting to stairs and landing areas is common practice. I have been a carpet fitter for over 30 years and this is quite normal. However the likes of carpet right and other national carpet retailers charge
well over the top for the extras (underlay and gripperETC). A suitable underlay for anywhere in the home should cost no more than £2.50 -£3.50 per metre and as for delivery charge what a joke ,the fitter delivers your carpet because he is coming to your house anyway and will not get any money for that delivery. We saw an offer at Carpetright which looked good value for a decent carpet. The salesman gave us a rough estimate before they came and measured the house next week.
When we saw the breakdown of the figures. it said:
Carpet £950 (before 50% discount) (38 sq mts)
U/Lay extra etc. (that was agreeable)
Carpet bars etc... " " "
Fitting of above nearly £100. (This was £25 higher than another estimate we'd had from a small shop for fitting everything)
Then further fitting charge for stairs and landing of £25.
Then carpet delivery charge £25.
Are we paying twice for fitting with extra charge of £25 for stairs and landing
or is this how the big companies make their money?.
I had thought of ringing Trading standards tomorrow to see if the company can double charge for fitting like this.
Your opinions would be welcome. Thanks Maisie0 -

I'm sorry, I just can not parse out any valid complaint. Are you saying you want to pay the same to fit a rectangular room with a single doorway than someone with stairs or a t-shaped hallway with half a dozen doorways? Surely it is entirely fair to make the base fitting price be the price for an easy, quick job and only those who require more time should have to pay for it.
Stairs are not complicated - but they take time.0
