Double charge on carpet fitting by Carpetright

Options
We saw an offer at Carpetright which looked good value for a decent carpet. The salesman gave us a rough estimate before they came and measured the house next week.

When we saw the breakdown of the figures. it said:

Carpet £950 (before 50% discount) (38 sq mts)

U/Lay extra etc. (that was agreeable)

Carpet bars etc... " " "

Fitting of above nearly £100. (This was £25 higher than another estimate we'd had from a small shop for fitting everything)

Then further fitting charge for stairs and landing of £25.

Then carpet delivery charge £25.

Are we paying twice for fitting with extra charge of £25 for stairs and landing
or is this how the big companies make their money?.

I had thought of ringing Trading standards tomorrow to see if the company can double charge for fitting like this.

Your opinions would be welcome. Thanks Maisie

I have seen extra charges for lino as well. I queried a similar issue a couple of years back and was told that the extra charge is because stairs and landings are often much trickier and take longer than a simple square room (often they have all sorts of angles etc.).

How many square yards of carpet are we talking about because most CR stores hae a standard 'per square yard' fee. Remember you not only have to pay to fit the carpet but also the underlay and the gripper rods etc.

The bit that surprises me though is a £25 delivery charge. In the past it has always been the fitter that picked up the carpet on his way to our house .. there was no delivery charge.

You should never buy the carpet bars from the store as the fitters usually always carry stock of these and will sell them to you for less.

Agree with Ivan about the delivery.

The extra charges seem to stand out as they are listed separately. I expect all companies will charge an extra rate for stairs but they will usually 'hide' this extra and just give one (slightly larger) quote to cover all fitting.

Hi, me and OH had exactly the same problem with Carpetright about a year ago. The details are a little fuzzy, but basically they didn't tell us about a delivery charge or the charge for the stairs. I had had a quote in store and the guy turned up and had the identical figure, but the maths didn't work at all. He tried to gloss over it, but I was adamant that we weren't told about certain things. It basically seemed like he worked around the quote initially given to try and make the price up, as it was completely different to the cost instore.

I insisted that as we had not been told, we would cancel the order and I made him rework the order completely in front of us. If I remember rightly, we didn't pay for delivery or the stairs/landing charge, as that had not been quoted to us (and it was in writing) The final figure was lower than the one he initially came round with, but we did have to insist. Try this - hope it works!

That's because they keep leftovers from previous jobs and sell them on ;)

I've just had a carpet from Carpetright fitted on my stairs.
Carpetright wanted 25.00 to deliver it and then 60.00 odd to fit the thing.
We picked up the carpet ourselves and got a bloke from the yellow pages to fit it for 35.00 and he was great(even gave him a tip as the carpet was a bit of a pig to lay).
I will never let carpetright deliver or fit another carpet in my house.

Thanks Ivan and all other posters. Your advice is a great help.

The carpet is about 38 sq mts.

The small shop wanted £75 for fitting everything.(inc underlay/door bars etc)

Carpetright want nearly £100 for fitting plus £25 delivery and £25 extra for stairs fitting.

Stairs have no angles curves etc. Straight 10 steps. Landing is about 8ft x 5 ft and straight. There are 2 bedrooms also straight squarish rooms.
    So nothing complicated.

Carpetright fitter just been. He give us a total figure so I asked for a breakdown. He wasn't happy about doing that. He broke it down a bit but didn't show £25 delivery charge and £25 extra for stairs so I said about that. He said yes they do charge that on top but that's all in the figure. I said so you are asking £25 delivery charge and an extra £25 for the stairs fitting. He said because stairs are complicated. I said ours are not. He didn't answer.
He said the £25 delivery charge was because Carpetright was mainly a cash and carry shop and if you want carpet delivered you have to pay for it. I said surely the delivery should come in with the fitting. he said No and said there was a notice in shop. I never saw a notice probably hidden somewhere.

We're thinking of getting the carpet from them as it is a very good carpet 80% wool 20% nylon and with their discount offer a good price. Then getting it fitted from elsewhere.

Thanks to the poster who suggested this.

It is all the extras that make it unreasonable.

Another thing I noticed in the very very small print was that the fitter was responsible for any errors or problems with carpet and fitting not Carpetright. You have to take it up with the fitter.

I think in law though Carpetright are liable for any problems as our contract would be with them.

Thanks again to all for advice.
  • i have just been to carpet right to get someone round to measure up and they insisted on a 50pound refundable deposit wich i have never had to do when using them in the past, and i have also found out about the delivery charges and fitting so i will ask around but does anyone know if i pick it up myself to save a few quid can i still use their fitters if i cant find cheaper? im having the whole house done so just a pound or so per m2 would really add up. my other bug bearing with them (woulndnt use them but they are the cheapest supplier in my area) is the hundreds of signs saying upto 60% off ALL carpets but surprise surprise as the one i have chosen is on a roll (not roll ends mind) but the normal rolls where they cut off the amount needed they are not reduced at all is this allowed???

Can I just add that my husband once watched a carpet fitter lay a carpet for me and hubby decided that from now on he would do any carpet laying himself as it looked fairly straight forward. He now fits all my carpets and lino, friends carpets and my Dads. Saving a fortune in carpet fitters bills over the years. So if you are agile enough it may be worth watching a proffessional and then trying it out for yourself. I have always bought second hand or cheap new carpet so if you have a super expensive Wilton/Axminster it may be worth paying for the proffessional. It's just a thought. icon7.gif

Tranding standards won't care. A company can charge for whatever they like in whatever fashion (eg it could have been the single sentance "supply & fit carpet & underlay in x rooms, corridors & stairs" with the total cost) in a quote, its down to you to decide if that quote is competative.
