MSN Messenger AVG Scanning Command Line Switches:

Here is a thread on the Grisoft AVG forums about MSN Messenger scanning. http://forum.grisoft.cz/freeforum/read.php?7,28088,sv= Haven't tried it but it should work.

The actual command line switch is: "C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Free\avgw.exe" /SE %1 obviously replace C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Free\ with the path to your AVG folder where avgw.exe is located.

norton may well be the only one that does - but it's disadvantages far outweigh any advantage gained from that facility. Norton is a bloated piece of av software that is very difficult to tweak according to your own system, is far too intrusive and system intensive and very difficult to remove completely - compared to more professional non consumer packages.

i dont think its biased - norton and to a lesser extent, mcafee will slow even a moderate pc to below satisfactory standards.

Hotmail has it's own screening...at least my version won't let me see anything untoward...and links from the junk folder e -mails aren't clickable.
Never have used Outlook Express, after all it's only a junction box, why not go straight to the e-mail on the website, or Hotmail whatever.

That's not completely true.

I ran Norton on one machine for a few years, and I still kept it faster than newer more modern machines I worked on without Norton.

I've used norton for years and then last year i tried mcafee and I'm amazed how much easier it is on my system running this AVG.

In the past I have had terrible trouble trying to get norton off my sytem especially. I removed mcafee last night and searched everything up to delete associated with it, so far so good.

I've thought for a long time that Norton is overated and its the worst at slowing down the pc. Mcafee was ok but nothing exceptional, definitely not worth paying for. And only today since putting avg on have I realized just how much mcafee also slowed the pc down. I'm just hoping AVG will protect me as well but time will tell

I find that generally the amount of !!!!!! people have running on their system without needing it has a far more negative effect on the performance of a computer than just running Norton. When I clean peoples computers, this is what I come accross time after time.

I've seen massive performance improvements many times, just for the fact that I spend a couple of minutes sorting through a computers startup folder. This, and full updated antivirus and spyware scans can improve a computers performance no end.

It was just a request for some general reccommendations. Everyone finds different things work better for the individual user, no need to throw your mouse out of the pram.

Well you can scan incoming Messenger downloads but not actual messages
if someone sends me a file via a Instant Message I just right click that
file and choose scan with after complete download (AV) and wait for the result before opening.

Also MSN Messenger will not allow the transfer of .exe files but Yahoo I dunno.
