My subscription to Norton has finally come to an end. I have never had any problems with it at all. (Touch wood) I am now turning to you to help me to decide the best way to go now.

Do I just renew my Norton package?

Or should I go with something else?

I use aol and windows xp.

Recommendations would be gratefully recieved please. :D

This is my Setup and its has worked a treat.

    AVG AntiVirus

    Sygate Firewall

    AdAware

    And MS AntiSpyware.

    CCleaner

Dont forget.. To Download your new AV and Firewall First then Uninstall
the Old AV, then install the new Programs..

Can I just sneak in here and ask the AVG does it scan emails through hotmail? and someone sent me some files through msn messenger and it said scanner failed. My macafeee was still in the tools options file transfer bit what exactly do i put in that bit to make it work? There is no particular bit that says avg scanner and do I need to set anything to send and recieve on yahoo too?

I already uninstalled my old mcafee before I installed the avg but zone alarm was already on. I'm thinking of trying sygate. Is avg advisable for windows xp too on a laptop rather than a pay one we already have?
    Thanx

AVG does scan emails but not webmail based ones only email
that comes to your PC via an e-mail bit of software but If
you have hotmail coming to your PC then yes it will..

  • I'd recommend NOD 32. It isn't widely known but it has the highest detection and prevention rate. Go to https://www.eset.com for info.

    Prices here; https://secure.nod32uk.com/order/category.asp?intCategoryId=7

£23 a year aint too bad for the best anitvirus out there.

Thankyou all for contributing, I am going to deal with it tomorrow while I am laying up after I get back from hospital. It will give me something to do and make sure I rest, lol.

According to the AVG manual that I downloaded, it does not cater for Instant Messenger services as provided by the anti-virus paid for packages.

    ;)

you can scan any file received by right clicking and using shell scanner. AVG is a paid for anti virus - but it also has free version that merely excludes scheduling. AVG and nod32 are excellent for me and I have tried them all.

You will find that Hotmail probably implement their own professional virus scanning software on their servers so email and attachments are virus checked on their servers.

If you download your Hotmail e-mail to Outlook Express/Outlook (which requires a subscription) then AVG will virus scan it providing it is setup correctly.

I would recommend the free version of AVG http://free.grisoft.com/ for Anti-Virus, the free version of ZoneAlarm for Firewall, http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/catalog/products/sku_list_za.jsp?dc=12bms&ctry=US&lang=en&lid=dbtopnav_zass and Ad-Aware personal edition (http://www.lavasoftusa.com) and Spybot - Search & Destroy (http://www.safernetworking.org) for Spy/Adware.

This has always worked for me. ;)
