Single fund investing is bad investing anyway. So, its probably a good thing you are not doing that.

The majority of my portfolio are spread across Funds at the moment, I have £5k in a single UK equity which is up by 17% since December which I'm delighted with. As and when the markets pick up then I'll expose more of my capital to equities

Yep, and how are they now?

A rally is an uptrend, not a straight line - and still got steam left in this bear rally.

(Am just enjoying that my losses are nearly gone now!)
Where are they now? Still 40% below where they were a fortnight ago. You must have bought very recently if your losses are nearly gone!

Yep, I sensed we were near a bottom point, so bought in trying to second guess the trendline. The massive RBS losses that were announced trounced banks, mainly because everyone worried they would be nationalised, but it looks like a bounce coming for a while yet.

For the long-term investor, could be worth jumping in now, could be worth holding off a while. Either way, personal call. :)

  • I am interested in getting some shares and trading online. I dont understand too much at the moment. This may sound like a really stupid question but i know shares can obviously drop. Can they drop below zero meaning i owe money. For example if i bought a share for 80p. Could it drop to -20p. I know obviously it could drop to 1p which would mean i lost money. I really dont know how this works and i dont mind taking some gambles with real money i actually have but dont want to end up owing money i dont have. Please advise. I have probably posted this in the wrong place but i find it confusing to know where to put it!

No shares cannot drop below zero, however that does not mean that you could not owe more money than you initially invested, if for example you are using leverage, this fact is what makes it necessary for sites to post the warning that "you may lose more than your initial investment" and may have caused your confusion.

  • no if they are shares then your ownership is limited. If you buy shares outright thats your total money invested, if you buy on margin then you have to pay more later.

cfd involves margin calls, spreadbetting does, but normal ownership is straight forward
