Not being able to take your kids out of school for holidays (say 10 days a year) only seems to make it harder for people on low incomes to have a holiday. So the very people who need a holiday don't get one and wealthy people who probably don't have as much stress can go when it is most expensive. From my experience it is often cheaper to go abroad than stay in this country..
I myself think it's bad because my I burn very easily so if I want to go to abroad to europe when it's not to hot or too cold it leaves me with very little chance. We also hate crowds, so that's another reason why we hate going in the school holidays.
I also believe that kids learn alot from travelling and seeing how others live and they can learn alot about history, geography etc.etc. I know that our trips abroad have really inspried my kids in their writing.

i agree with you comments about kids learning a lot from travelling etc,

i think my sons have benefitted hugely from experiencing different holidays especially as we arent the type of family to sit round the pool etc ,its like a huge adventure for them and they love it : )

but not sure i agree with the bit about being wealthy = less stress ,
a lot of people who are in the higher paid jobs have to work long hours in hugely stressful positions to get said high salary

I still maintain I DID touch a nerve by disagreeing with you but lets just agree to leave it at that - we both have our opinions and are not going to change them

The highlighted quote from you Gregg1 was posted yesterday and yet you still continue to sit there and judge me - I feel that you are like a dog with a bone and until I agree with you, then you will not let go!

For your information schools do not go on trips abroad ONCE in their education - my son's school went skiing last year and a letter came home this week to go again next year!!! He also had the chance to go in year 6 also (last year of primary school) and I know for a fact that there is a trip when he is in year 10 - so this is not the case as far as my son's school is concerned!!!

I also am not complaining about the amount of hours my OH works, just stating a fact - and to be able to spend some precious time as a family this means taking our kids out of school.

As previously stated I think we really need to put this bat and ball debate to bed and agree to disagree - you do what YOU feel is right for your family and I will do what I feel is right for mine!

For goodness sake, let it go I really could'nt care less whether you agree with me or not - its just my opinion.

Some schools allow parents to take their children out of school for up to 10 authorised days - not specifically for holidays, although many parents [myself included] take these days off for going on holiday.

Some people on this thread see nothing wrong in this, others feel that it is not right and holidays should not be taken during term time - hence the debate [and an enjoyable one at that!]

It does seem to appear that it depends on the school whether or not they allow parents to take up to 10 days for holidays etc.

I agree with your second para. It has been a very interesting debate and you have summed it up perfectly.

Rachie- How are you managing just 3 days off? Are you going for less than a week? Just interested. I try to make the most on inset days (teacher training etc) to reduce any term-time hols.
