He's a very very rich man - this is small change to him. Does this make him any more philanthropic than someone on a normal income who, say, has a direct debit of £15 a month to a charity? I don't think so!

Instead of swallowing this PR without question, perhaps you should ask why he does not provide his software at a price affordable to the sort of people he is professing to help in developing countries?

I presume your username is not accidental (especially considering the avatar you used to have). Intel is the dominant microprocessor maker, which has many interests in common with Microsoft - hence the word "Wintel" and the marketing money it pumps into the TV ads for PC World, etc, etc, in order to play its annoying "Intel Inside" jingle :D

It really does amaze me why users have to moan about every little thing
that Intel or Microsoft do or say I mean C'mon its only jealousy afterall
the bloke is loaded fair play to him I say and he does a shed load of good for charity.

If you dont like your OS you can always choose to use Linux and AMD
and if thats not a possibility why not Invent or make your own OS and Proccessors then everyone will be happy then.. But dont sell the idea
or you could make a shed load of cash and end up like BG

Until youv'e dont that I cant see any reason to MS Bash.

Well I guess the lady doth protest too much...

...especially as I can't even see your signature, since someone pointed out you have the option of hiding them

You do have a vested interest, then?

I am not moaning about "every little thing" that either Microsoft or Intel do. Please don't misrepresent me - it does not help your argument.

The fact remains that Microsoft has a proven (in the Courts), well-documented track record of trying to crush interoperability and competition to maintain its monopoly. This is not in the interests of the consumer - which is the foundation upon which this site is built.

And the fact remains that the richest man in the world's charitable donations, as a proportion of his income, are nothing special. Ally that to the fact that if you or I give to charity, we don't get our names plastered all over the papers, and anyone can see that there is more to his actions than meets the eye.

Let me be honest about what 'optimised for IE means'.

First of all we use a chat forum package - Vbulletin, which should work on all formats.

In the main site we use an old news management software (we're looking at a new one). when we format articles, because its an old system, sometimes the HTML makes it look different in IE and Mozilla (and other formats). When that happens I say "make it look right in IE and as good as possible in Mozilla". That's all - in otherwords if its going to look a bit wonky in one or the other, it looks a bit wonky in Mozilla - simply because thats the way most users look at it

So don't worry we're not supporting Bill G, just slightly biased that way if neccesary.

Thanks Martin. I assumed that was the case and I understand the rationale behind it. The unfortunate consequence is that it looks to the casual user as though you are kow-towing to Billg but as you're looking at new software, I expect the problem will go away eventually!
