No. With cable companies you don't need to have a telephone line to have broadband.

Which means saving freaks like ourselves can get cable broadband and then VOIP telephone like skype (which you download on your PC) to make and receive phone calls cheaply.

Edit - oh if you're referring to paying for the telephone line "on the internet" like skype, yes you do but its cheap like 1899 except you don't have any line rental ..... if you want to recieve calls then you pay something like £8 for 3 months... and PC to PC calls are free.

Forgive me for being dumb but are you saying that with cable broadband you can have broadband without any phone line coming into your house at all??

I withdraw my statement that all cable users can have broadband! :)

I honestly thought all NTL areas were digital now! Telewest I believe have managed it. Now they're merging I wonder if you can expect your area to be done quicker or not. Have you asked NTL when your area is going to be upgraded?

They seem to have a lot of the Cable & Wireless areas untouched from what I have read which is a bit naff. When Telewest acquired Eurobell a few years back it was quite seemless ... well for the South West at least.

Yup :) If Telwest or NTL are offering a cable broadband service to your house, you do not need to buy their telephone service. They are different services, you pick what you want.

It's only ADSL related products e.g. wanadoo, BT broadband, AOL that require a telephone rental for broadband.

So assuming I can get cable broadband in my area I don't need a phone line at all from anyone?? I understand not having the phone line from the cable company but I assumed you have to get it from someone else. We hardly use our phone as I use my mobile, basically we only have a phone line for the broadband.

Yeah. Just stick your postcode into the Telewest or NTL site (depending where you are in the country) and see if you are offered broadband. Based on your area having cable broadband an engineer will come round and install a cable box inside your house.

There is no relationship between telephone and broadband with cable services, except for pricing tariffs that offer the two for a discount, if you choose to have both! Its only ADSL which forces you to have a telephone with broadband :)

Some of us are stuck with BT :) grr.

Ahhhh I understand now. I thought ALL broadband had to run through a phone line. Now I see cable broadband is different to ADSL broadband (which we have). Thanks for taking the time to explain it all to me. Appreciate it. Maybe we can't get cable as I'm sure hubby would have gone that route to ditch the phone line as we rarely use it.

    Thanks again. :D

    No problem.

Its worth checking NTL or Telewest with your postcode every few months as they expand/upgrade their regions each year.
  • we originally went with ntl because they stated they would be the first in the area to supply bb and didgital tv(cable). well that was over 10 years ago.nobody seems to know anything. if anyone on here has a directors number or email i am quite willing to contact them for information as im getting nowhere fast...

  • and i would also like to say that with analogue tv and dialup we seem to be geting less for our money as they are putting all the interest and money into digital and bb!
