Toyota Supra experiences

Debt-free and Proud!
Looking to trade in my old car and go for something fun and wallet draining for a few years, until the far more wallet draining kids arrive. Was looking at either an alfa romeo 3.2 GTV or a 3.0 Toyota supra but are veering towards the supra. Both are fantastic looking cars though!

Does anyone have experience of owning one, things to look out for? I'm off to view a couple of examples at the weekend, both with FSH and from specialists, one is a grey import, so not too famliar on how that could affect insurance etc. Advice appreciated!

  • You'd be much better off asking this question on a Jap car forum, or somewhere like Pistonheads. You'll get much more input, and many more recommendations for similar cars to go for.

Agree with Pew pew, my only experience with a Supra wouldn't be much use to you, as it had been tuned/modded to 800BHP, and I scared myself silly in it.

I'm pretty sure Japenese Performance Magazine did a buyers guide a few years back but i can't find it online.

As a few of others have suggested there is plenty of owners forums for these car's they will be able to provide the best and most up todate info.

I've considered these cars before (for similar reasons to you, but decided my mad year is going to be next year :) ):
The little i know about them is the Toyota is generally reliable and v.fast even when standard. However its hard to find a unmodfied one. Unmodified manual 3.0 turbo is the ideal but like hens teeth. Worse case stick to simple mod's that are reciepted and preferably a brand name e.g HKS Blitz etc.
As for the GTV 3.0v6 it sounds and looks beautiful but i've heard the extra weight ruins the handling the 2.0 is supposed to be a better all round bet. Besides that Alfa's are Alfa's if you accept the associated pro's and con's i don't think their a bad car
  • Oh Nissan 200sx is another car car of the similar ilk. The S14 or S15 as the later models are known are the ones to go for, touring pack gives a little luxury too.

Has to be the Supra. No question about it.

    Hmmm

Buying a Jap sports car is that not a bit like buying a diesel soft-top?

    Why bother?

    Get something with some soul.

Soul? I'd put an 'ah' sound in front of that to describe your criticism.

Japs do good cars - but I would avoid a Mitsubishi GTO at all costs, unless you have money to throw down the drain.

Neighbour had an S14,and after he'd 'played' with it a little,it went like the proverbial off a shovel.I actually drove it,and managed to wheelspin/snake it in 3rd gear.he reckoned it was doing about 350bhp,and to be fair it probably was after he'd put a new turbo on,bigger injectors, upgraded ecu,and we were going to go to the Nurburgring, but after posting a picture of it on the SXOC website,he was made an offer for it he couldn't refuse.

And the beauty of the SX,is it's not as 'in your face' as the Supra.

I believe it now languishes in the London town area.
That's my mutt in the picture above.

I'm sure they are technically brilliant, just like German sports cars.

I have had this argument for 30 years normally against German sports cars.

And ne'r the twain shall meet.

Italian or British (not many of them left...lol).

    But why get rude?
