Halifax16th was a Friday and generally banks work on a 5 day week and don't count weekends for clearing things. So it makes sense it would appear on your account on the 19th of January. However, if you read through the threads on here you will see that people make payments and some companies don't get them to debit it for a few days afterwards. So its generally not the bank it is more so the company you have spent your money with that maybe has their system set up for requesting it a day later, or a few days later. But in this case it was paid for on a Friday and took out on a Monday. Not surprising considering he next two days were a weekend.0

Natwest would normally earmark the money in your account for the payment for 2 days so although it shows you can't access it. After 2 days if not claimed by the company then the money is made available to you again.0 -
Is there a point to the poll?!
When the company actually debits your account is nothing to with Natwest.
Not sure where you get this '3am update' thing either.0 -

Well, even on a rubbish interest rate you're getting something back - what's the problem with them taking the money late?0

They're talking rubbish.
Debit card payments are at the whim of the merchant. I had one come out 3 months later by MVC, the one time music retailer. They shouldn't really but then can.0 -
Nothing really to do with the banks, they send the money when the request arrives: I fly my in-laws by bmi airlines and usually the money is taken out 2 weeks after. The other day I bought a DVD from BBC and the money left my account a month later…0

Just have to stick up for Natwest here...
On 1st Dec I made a debit card transaction for £50 to Somerfield.. what with Christmas and everything approaching, I didn't check that it had gone. Somerfield *finally* took the payment on 10th January.. I didn't have enough funds in my account at the time, as I generally keep a £40 balance in my current account to prevent me spending. I transfer from my savings as and when.
Obviously the £50 debit took me overdrawn.. Natwest initially charged me £28 overdraft charges and £30 card misue fee. When I spoke to them to query why the money had been taken when it had (even the ref for the debit was 01.12.08) they told me the 6 month rule, but could see that it was a genuine error and refunded all the charges.
(Somerfield were quite useless when I raised it with them, and basically said "tough. but please do continue shopping with us.." No! lol )
It's not Natwest's fault - raise it with the company .0
