I'll second DVD Shrink if it's a home movie it wouldn't need too much compression to fit.
You could re encode the movie prior to burning if it is in .avi format at a lower bitrate TMPEGenc trial would do that with good quality. There is a free trial here:
http://www.tmpgenc.net/en/download.html
It shouldn't watermark or otherwise cripple the video either within the trial time.0 -
Yep, DVD shrink is the easiest and simpliest to use and with good results.0

Wait, aren't you the one who first recommended it? Why don't you tell us what you'd use personally then, or do you wanna keep it to yourself?

Its a money saving forum. On that basis alone id say burn to a dual layer disc (best quality) or use shrink.
If I was to reduce the bitrate myself id use DVD REBUILDER using the inbuilt HC encoder (Arguably the best encoder for MPEG2 on the planet):idea:0 -

There seems to be a freeware version of dvd rebuilder? Is that too limited?0 -
Yes I have had problems with various brands and different writers. I find burning at slow speed no greater than 4x helps. I also found some success only 1-2 failures at most with Infiniti 360. I got some other week from Amazon for about £14 for £25 but they went back up in value. My got my last lot from Ebuyer but they didnt have them last time I lookedHave you used dual layer discs save? Its just ive had a ton of problems using various discs and the ONLY ones ive managed to get working properly as yet are DATWRITE TITANIUMs.0

Postage on top but the postage stays the same (about 6 quid if memory serves correct) no matter how many you buy. So buying in bulk turns out pretty cheap.:idea:0 -
