Forgive me for this, BUT isn't the 6th April the start of the new Tax Year??? (2009/10) AND...... haven't Maternity Grants been available for years??
Surely this post is mistakenly implying this is grant new, when it is really only about the change in the amount paid as a grant that has been paid continually tax year after tax year when a child is born.
Surely the amount refers purely to that which applies after 6/4/09 and does not mean that people giving birth before that date will not get a similar amount i.e. the maternity grant applicable for the Tax Year 2008/2009.????????
So don't rush out and get pregnant, this is not really a "Grabbit";)ac's lovechild0 -
DC - This is a new grant. Every pregnant mum (within the dates) will be eligible for it.
There's also a £500 grant available, if you are in receipt of CTC above the basic level (£500 odds per year). Both of these grants will now be able to be claimed if you fit the criteria.
Women on low incomes will now be entitled to £690.00. Women who are not in receipt of CTC (or are on the basic rate) who would previously be entitled to NO grant will now be £190.00 better off."...Our greatest fear is not that we are inadequate,
but that we are powerful beyond measure".

same here i get nothing.. only people on income support get the 500 grant as far as im aware!?
hi just so you know...any one claiming child tax credits and getting more than £550ish a year ( around £45 month ctc ) is entitled to the £500 grant...if you only get that amount now then its best to wait till babys born then phone up child tax credits office and add baby on to it...your tax credits will then go up so you are then entitled to grant. you only have till babys 3 months old to claim grant

If you're entitled to it you should claim it. Don't feel bad about it!0

My midwife also has plenty of forms for this, but a bit too early for me to claim yet (due Oct).
For what it's worth, I disagree with this new grant being in the form of a cash handout, and would have much preferred to see it targeted in some way (eg vouchers) to ensure that it's spent on healthy eating to benefit the baby and give it a good start as intended. That said, I will claim it when I become eligible as should everyone else. In that respect it's no different to benefitting from a tax cut that you voted against, surely?0 -
Brilliant news for those expecting and qualify.
Ignore the trolls, they're just jealous and quite rightly as someone pointed out I wonder if they'll be turning down a state pension which after all is a Government Handout wether you work or not. I imagine they won't
The sad thing is that a lot of people with these views are actually women and you get them on parenting forums spouting the same kind of rubbish.
I kind of agree that maybe it could be given by mid wives at certain stages in the form of supermarket vouchers and the sure start vouchers in say babies r us/mothercare vouchers or something so that the real intent of them are being utilised.0
