In my viewing experience an xvid/divx full movie with all the proper sound can fit onto a normal 700mb cdr. Why anyone needs a dvd with 4400mb of space is beyond me. The picture quality is I would say easily equal to that of dvd format (mpeg2). Its marketing gone mad for new formats. Now we are going to have blue ray and another I cannot think of atm.
    Just my pennysworth.

700mb is quite low for an avi. You'll notice pixelation especially on solid colour backgrounds. And watching it at a higher resolution such as on a monitor will show it up even more. 1500mb is about right for me, and allows for a decent quality of encoding for the audio. That way you can get 3 movies per disc.

With regards to other formats, if you watch a HD trailer on a proper HD tv, you'll see the difference. It really is quite fantastic, although still a long way off in my opinion.

Because a dvd can hold around six movies in divx format, its actually cheaper to use a dvdr than a cdr so its not beyond me.

Ok so if i get DVD-R cds they will hold approx 5 or 6 full length movies in comaprison to one on a normal CD? I didnt think i could burn movies onto a CDR? Or is it because i would be watching them on one of these Acoustic things and not my playstation?
  • of course you can put a movie file on a cd. a divx player just plays the file - it doesnt care what the disk is.

The divx files are burnt onto a dvdr as data files, the divx player will list the files on the menu screen and play whichever you select.
  • DVD movies use MPEG2 compression (don't worry about the name). What you need to know is that it is fairly old technology, and hasn't changed since DVDs first came out.

Since then, things have moved on, a bit like you can compress a 650Mb music CD into 100Mb MP3 files and still have decent quality. (In fact MP3 is old, and you can get much better compression with CD quality from things like Ogg Vorbis, but that's another story...)

Many DVD players can play VideoCDs (VCD's or SVCD's), which are a very old way of putting movies onto a CD - generally poor quality). DivX movie files can be burnt onto CD or DVD - be aware that some cheaper players won't play DivX DVDs, only CDs. You lose things like the DVD menu structure, and of course it is illegal to copy any DVDs that you don't own to DivX or to download copyrighted material from the internet.

BTW, these are very specific file compression formats, and can have a variety of extensions including AVI. Just be aware that not all AVIs are DivX, and so will not play on a DivX machine without being converted to DivX format.

been hunting for one today and have found this one DIVX its at pixmania and seems to be a decent spec for the price with progressive scan and DIVX/XVID playback but at £8.80 delivery charge kinda takes the shine off the bargain. Has anyone found any better? I see scan have reduced players but with £10 delivery you are still looking at around the £40 mark

Why not try a recordable dvd/divx machine.
Tescos still have this one for as little as £60 in some stores.

    Very happy with mine.
  • I got a Chili 6100XS (actually made by Yamada) for £24 +delivery from Pixmania. It's very good, already region-free and the cheapest I have seen. (I got it for my sister as I already have a divx dvd player, but I'm jealous as the Chili looks nicer)
