DivX players?

Silly silly question but here goes :

Why do people want them i mean whats so good with them? If they are so good i may look into getting one. What are the pros and cons and what exactly are they for? Told you it was silly. I feel embarrased now :(

divx players are dvd players that will, of course, play normal dvds, but they will also play simple avis, mpegs that you can download or transfer onto cds/dvds i.e. they don't have to be in dvd format to play. They will also play dvds or cds containing collections of pictures.
  • I have heard that people download movies from the internet and watch them on divx players. This is illegal and I would not encourage this :D To download a dvd takes 4000MB+. To download and watch a divx takes between 700MB and 1400MB, depending on quality. This means you can download movies quicker if you have a divx player. Another method is using your PC with a TV out card. A bit more expensive but it gives more options and saves you burning to disk films you download.

Please note no hollywood movie studios were hurt in the writing of this post
  • So where will i get one of these at a decently cheap price? So they are just DVD players that play extras? No need to change the file to DVD format, i can leave it as AVI or whatever? Coooool
  • You can get an Acoustic Solutions player from Argos for £20.

DivX films need to be burnt onto Cd's though, not Dvd's

yep it doesnt make any difference what disk it is as long as the file is. Obviously with dvds you can fit many files on.
  • Could either of you let me know how you do ? I have only ever copied .Vob files to DVD.
  • Dont worry, I spotted something I didnt before.

However, I use a convertion tool that allows more films to be converted onto the disc.

In my viewing experience an xvid/divx full movie with all the proper sound can fit onto a normal 700mb cdr. Why anyone needs a dvd with 4400mb of space is beyond me. The picture quality is I would say easily equal to that of dvd format (mpeg2). Its marketing gone mad for new formats. Now we are going to have blue ray and another I cannot think of atm.
    Just my pennysworth.

Because a dvd can hold around six movies in divx format, its actually cheaper to use a dvdr than a cdr so its not beyond me.
