American Food? Suggestions needed

Hi
I have two small children to help them learn a little more about the world and things that happen we have started to have "country days" when there is a significant event (chinese new year etc), as part of these we have have dinner that reflects food from that country.

To reflect Barack Obamas inaguration as president we plan to have American day tomorrow....the problem is trying to work our "American Food", looking for relativly healthy but interesting food, need food that (almost 4yr old and 2yr old will eat). so far have potato wedges, corn on cob, maybe some chicken wings/drumsticks in some kind of sauce, daughter would like hotdogs so may have to have these as well. Gonna have cheesecake type pudding (probably unless anyone has better suggestion) Has anyone got any suggestions on American food that we could have.make
thanks
Jim

  • pumpkin pie!

    mac and cheese

you could have hominy grits and biscuits in white gravy for breakfast : )

    american style pancakes!

( my other half is a new yorker --- well a long islander - so if you need any help feel free to yell )
  • What about some American baking? Muffins are typically American and really easy to make with kids. Cornbread or 'biscuits' (like scones) are easy too. How about Tex-Mex food -chilli, tacos, burritos ? Boston baked beans, popcorn, hm hamburgers. Google for recipes ;)

Obama was born in Hawaii so maybe you could find some Hawaiin recipes -break out the canned pineapple.

surely the most obvious american pudding would be pancakes and syrup... or pecan pie! mmmm i love pecan pie :D
What matters most is how well you walk through the fire
  • How about pancakes for breakfast, you can make these healthier by adding blueberries (£1 for a pack in ASDA). Make some cornbread or muffins for tea. How about squeezing a few florida oranges for your own fresh OJ? You could make your own burgers too.
  • Key lime pie?

    MMMMM

    It's only a game

  • Being american maybe I can help a little.

Fried chicken is a big thing there. I use breadcrumbs rather than flour on them and bake on a rack in a hot oven. Healthier than frying for sure. Plenty of salt, pepper, garlic and some paprika in the breadcrumb mixture. I also dip mine in a beaten whole egg or egg white before putting it in the crumb mixture.

Corn on the cob, green beans, mash, baked sweet potatoes (in jacket or mashed,) cornbread (make with finely ground polenta,) most any fruits in a pie or crumble, or melon chunks, grapes, strawberries in a fruit salad.

Contrary to popular belief, not everyone from the states eats junk. :rotfl:

  • Peyton can I ask you what bit of the chicken you use for your 'fried chicken' -on the bone pieces, boneless breasts or a jointed chicken ?

Ooh, lots of thing depending on how much you want to cook or have available, but I see already mentioned most of the things I can think of (none of them particularly healthy). :p

    Apple Pie
Chowder (probably best bet for healthiness, can do veggie or fish)
    Pastrami
Cowboy food - Sausage and beans
    Boston Beans
    Cheeseburgers
    Blueberry Pie or Muffins
    Anything with pumpkin or peanuts
    Cotton Candy (Candyfloss)
    Mortgage
