Many years later..
Same old market. Same old overpricing.
I dont know if we are meant to haggle but comparing cars to tins of beans kind of suggests to me youre ignoring the real market and think you know how much cars are worth more than anyone. Problem is you dont. For a start tins of beans don't have anywhere near the amount of factors cars do, they are all the same, cars have thousands of factors.
There are currently so many cars overpriced on autotrader it is laughable. You dont have to look for long to see them. It's also proven with often loads of better cars for either the same or less. It seems to be dealers do not check current prices as much as people who spend time looking. We are not talking about the odd one or two we are talking a lot of cars.
Lets not pretend cars are like tins of beans, its a terrible comparision. The reason people haggle with cars is quite simply because so many dealers overprice their cars by a lot and the prices are not logical in so many instances you can't expect to be treated the same as other products. It is the business you are in, sure some dealers are trying to price fair but a hell of a lot are not, whereas tins of beans are the same prices generally. You dont have to look long to see cars overpriced by as much as £2000. You can argue this until youre blue in the face, but the actual car prices speak for themselves.0 -

I find the best thing to do when buying a used car is to pay for a trade in value of the car you are looking at buying. This gives me an indication of the price the car was probably bought in at/traded in at and will give you as a buyer a good idea of the mark up the dealer is making by the screen price.
I once part ex'd a Subaru Impreza uk model for an Audi A6 at Evans Halshaw. The salesman gave me the usual patter of "it's a model that we would not normally sell so wont be able to sell it quickly" to justify giving me a crap part ex price of £5,750. I knew I would have had to part with some money to change so asked the salesman if the Audi had been part ex'd in to them. He said it had so I asked of him to get the paperwork from that transaction that showed the part ex price they gave for the car. He did to my surprise so I offered him £500 to change if he put 12 months tax, tank of fuel etc etc which he did. Anyway, to give you an idea of the mark up they had the A6 was taken in at £6,250 which is what I payed for it overall and was on their forecourt for £8,995. My Impreza was priced up at £8,995 the day the cars were swapped over.0
