No worries, Sammy. You read several views and then choose your own course of action as with anything.
The concern that we have, which I think is why Becky was getting a little frustrated, is that new runners are not in a position to assess the potential long term lower limb damage of pushing demineralised bones through uncomfortable aches. It is a big enough risk anyway without adding to the risk factors.
The most common comment is along the lines of 'Magazine XYZ says you should start by run/walk/run.....so it must be right'. as though there is no other way.
It is not of any benefit to me to 'sell ' one method over another, but I have to say that when my own legs are on the line, as they were in Sept/Oct when I couldn't run a mile, then there is no way I would entertain the idea of run/walk/run. You need to build bone density to handle the rigours of training workloads later.Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j
Blackpool Marathon 11/4/2010 (Target=2:59:59) (6:52/mile)
Abingdon Marathon 17/10/2010, (Target=2:48:57) (6:27/mile)

You are NOT slow, if you are slow, so I am I since I have run a comparable wava time
run/walk annoys me because of exactly that though - it says to everyone 'oh its fine to start running even if you really unfit' when in reality it isnt - take it slowly and you'll progress much faster later on...and it says running is easy - it isnt - its very very tough to improve - but if you put the work in you get the results - Uk and Rich prove that
If you want to get faster Sammy you need to put in a consistent training effort of about 20-30 miles a week (about 40 miles a week if you want to do a marathon) consisting of a mix of running - slow runs, long runs, speedwork and hill work - chuck all that in the right mix and you'll be faster in no time - which in running terms is about 6 months
Bear in mind it takes about 6 marathons to get to your fastest speed which even in the rare event that are never injured would be 2 a year so three years from your first one with consistent and increasing training...0 -

I can see why Becky gets frustrated.. If I had known of the dangers I perhaps wouldn't have attempted the run/walk method.....so its more a question of education that there is another method out there.....this thread does that admirably.Quality is doing something right when no one is looking - Henry Ford

SIX!!! best start the consistent training now....
and bless you Becky for comparing me to you in the slowness stakes but wasn't your comparable WAVA in a bloomin marathon...the only reason I managed yesterday was I knew that the race would be over in another ten minutes and I wouldn't die before the end...not sure I could do that consistently in a marthon...not yet anyway:DQuality is doing something right when no one is looking - Henry Ford

I hope its not 6 marathons to get to your best!:o:o;)
(I'm hoping you meant 'at least' 6? (Fingers crossed)):p:pGt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

Ahh but that can be remedied with some distance training - if you already have the speed:D
I never really got time to post this before but I actually had a really rough patch at 6 miles in the marathon and lost my pace dramatically from there till 18 miles - I only got through by telling myself - just 10 more minutes, just 10 more minutes - it got better by the time I saw everyone at mile 23 though and I was soo ecstatic when I saw my friends and family I ran back to blub on them and lost my 4:30 :rolleyes: - it was sooo worth it though and next time will be even better0 -
so for twelve miles you ran on 'another ten mins' that is seriously impressive.....Quality is doing something right when no one is looking - Henry Ford
