They are doing their job and have to ask those questions or they get a disciplinary. It's the same with all ISPs, you have to ask the questions as you hit them or you get into trouble. The only thing you can do is hit them as quickly as possible and move through them quickly if the user has already done them. Putting the phone down is not going to help resolve the issue so why do it?scheming_gypsy wrote: »i've worked in IT for 17 years so after a few minutes of her telling me to do this and that and me telling her i'd already done it, i told her to sling it and hung up. if they want to tell me to do loads of pointless stuff they can phone me.0 -
virgins fibre optic cables donot generally go in tothe premesis. There are converters in the street and the line that comes intothe houseis copper, this is their main restriction.Countries that have fibre optic in to the house can offer 100mb or more.
we have been on 512kb since 2001, we shoulkd be able to get 2.5mb but although we have asked to be put on to a higher rate and tiscali have said they would, on countless occasions, it has not changed.
Just thankful that we have internet, but using bbc iplayer is just not going tohappen at the slow speed we get.Nudge nudge, Wink wink, Say No More!0 -
Are you using Orange's crap supplied router?
I encountered the same propblem at my mother's, she was paying for 2Mb and getting barely 256K.
I swapped the router for a Dlink and bingo the speed went up to 1.5Mb!A friend is someone who understands your past, believes in your future, and accepts you just the way you are.0 -
You can get a 10MB National Ethernet connection for abot £13k per year.
Or you could try a 3G mobile connection for about £30 per month and get a free laptop to go with it. I was only joking about the National Ethernet connection, but this is how much they cost (worth every penny though).Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.0 -
Dont know if it helps but the problems are generally when OH is trying to play his PS3 in online mode. We've had probs with internet connection, speed etc at other times but he consistently cant play in online mode so this is the main problem. Could it be anything to do with the 'connection' from the ps3? not sure how it works? Although orange have told us we can only get 0.5meg so it makes sense that this amount would struggle.MANAGED TO CLEAR A 3K OVERDRAFT IN ONE FRUGAL, SUPER CHARGED MONEY EARNING MONTH!:j

Don't forget about wireless speed. There is no point having a 8Mbit/s ADSL connection if you then connect to your home wireless router using a 802.11b wireless connection with an effective transfer rate of 3Mbit/s or less. I would advise anyone who is getting poor download speeds to check whether the speed improves if you are plugged directly into the back of the router using an ethernet cable. At least then you know whether wireless is a problem or not.0

Hi there, forget what Orange say, they wont help you if they are convinced you can only get X Mb.
First things to do are go here. Run 2 tests using your phone number AND postcode and reply with the results for each test.
Next is to get hold of your Line stats from your router. Go here for a guide of how to get them. It depends on your router where they are located but hopefully you can get yours from this guide ok.
If you can give me your stats then I can see if there is a problem or not.
I also need to know if you have more then one phone socket in your house?
Do you have ADSL filters on all of your USED sockets?
IS your router plugged into the 'master socket' ? looks like this? If not can you describe it OR find one that looks like this in your house?
What have you tried so far? I.E have you tried replacing ADSL filters?
If you can provide answers to this I may be able to help.
Regards

thats an easy one to answer..
it's my perogative to spend 20 minutes on the phone to somebody i can barely understand asking me to do things that'd i've told them i've already done, at the cost of 50p a minute. Or tell them to sling it.
I couldn't give a shiney one if they get a disciplinary or not if half the questions are pointless. They're there to offer the customer a service, they weren't so i saved some money. I'll email them instead with all the answers to the questions: different filters, tried with nothing else plugged in, router directly into the master socket etc etc.0
