bearing in mind that Northern Rock's main thing was in part down to "ordinary punters" being struck with the fear of doom and going to their local branch to withdraw their cash.

who better than the "ordinary public" (like folk who believe that headline grabbing rate etc) to believe than the face of the BBC itself. i mean, at the time he was obviously reporting an unbiased story with all the facts and not just saying "northern rock is in a bit of financial turmoil but it isnt life threatening":

    see:
    1) http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/thereporters/robertpeston/2008/08/04/index.html
    2) http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/thereporters/robertpeston/2008/08/05/index.html

any "ordinary punter" would obviously read that and go "holy crap lets withdrawn now!" surely he, as a journalist would have known that was how his work would be taken.

But 99% of them only did that because nobody said, "As long as you have under £35k, your savings are guaranteed by the government".

Wouldn't that have been a more responsible piece of reporting?

Methinks Doomcow is quoting Peston from 2008, the run on Northern Rock was in 2007. At the time BBC was certainly being careful in reporting only what had happened, so as not to cause alarm. And Peston's blog here does the same:

i was quoting the first link i found, didnt have time to go into too much detail, but the point still stands and i think is well said by biggles:

Wouldn't that have been a more resonsible piece of reporting?

so has the BBC not trying to cause alarm policy been abandoned for the ratings grabbing doom & gloom from Peston and his afore mentioned "effect"? (again its not the reporting of facts, its the dramatisation and sensationalistic "i know first" attitude etc)

the man is an irritating obnoxious moron ,bring back Jeff Randal.

The other day peston was on News 24 talking about Honda closing down production for 2 months -he actully laughed at the prospect of Honda workers sitting at home -not very professional at all -do not like the man.

I say bring back Evan Davies.

I find the BBC appear to be reporting anticipated news, rather than as it happens.

I prefer Channel 4 news now.

i dont think its the BBC that is poor but the whole trend in the media to stop reporting the news but start presenting their opinion on what the news is.

D'you know, I can see all those "good 'ol boys" in, say, South Dakota, watching the BBC 10 o'clock news - as they do - and saying: "Did ya see that Martha, Robert Peston has just reported that a small bank in the north of England is looking rocky. I think we should sell our shares in Lehman and withdraw our deposits in Citi and BofA."
Do you really belive tha RP has such reach that he precipitated the whole world banking colapse? If you do, may I kindly suggest that you are reading the wrong newspapers.

I think you've misunderstood the reason- he has a speech impediment and I think should be applauded for taking on the challenge of television reporting in the circumstances.
