We are off to York next week for a short break and posted on the England board for places to eat and was given this site within the Greedy pig section there are reviews on places to eat including sandwich bars, chippys etc which I have found really helpful. If I pick up any tips along the way I will pass them on however my sons are early teens and things take on a diferant perspective.

  • I would recommend Bettys just for the experience. Yes, it's expensive and there's a long queue during the day, but we went there in the early evening. There was no queue and we had something like a toasted teacake, which didn't break the bank but the surroundings were fab and there was even a guy playing the piano (this was a few years ago so don't know if they still do that). They had highchairs for kids. If you go there, check out the ladies loo downstairs - a cut above the usual.

If I ever need a laugh, I go and look at the prices at Bettys!

I simply cannot pay their prices, I would rather eat my own liver!

    Hi,

After reading this thread, I am thinking of going to York next week with my 4 yr old and OH for a few days. Any recommendations of where to stay is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

For our first night we are booked into Holiday Inn Express East which is £49 (winter sale rate?)and includes a continental breakfast. For the second & third night we are booked into the Holiday Inn Express,Clifton Road at £65 a night inc. breakfast. This would have been my choice for the whole break but left it a bit late. Read reviews on it and it seemed the better of the two especially for convienience. You might be able to find somewhere better and get the wee one for free.

Stayed at Holiday Inn Express York East and can recommend it. Rooms were immaculate and staff friendly.

On the other hand my least favorite place is the Yorvik centre. I went years ago and was very impressed. However, a couple of years ago there was a vast amount of money spent on "upgrading" it and it seemed much worse after. I find it a pain to get in (big queues), overpriced, boring and the trip around lasts no time at all. Maybe it is just me that doesn't like the place, so I would recommend that you check with other people who have been.

Have a great time, whatever you decide to see and do! :j

I second this! It cost us about £24 for 2 adults and 7yr old (baby was free). It took longer to queue to get in then it took to go round the centre! You really you are in and out within no time at all. Also you can't take a pushchair on part of the tour, so that was a bit of a pain.

We stayed in the Roman Bath when we went to York which was charning and didn't break the bank! Oh yes and you get bed breakfast and a ticket to the roman baths museum in their cellars! Huge brekky too -- Really sets you up for the day! :T

Great park and ride service. Rail Museum is free and is just the thing for a wet day. Dont forget Betty's tea room for a Fat Rascal (walk it off around the walls after)
Worth doing the bus asan orientation exercise. Yorvick cente - ok when the schools arent in !

Thanks for the hotel recommendations. Looks like rooms are not available for the dates I want. Will now consider going during the April hols.

    Cheers.
